ABSTRACT: Underprepared for the underprepared

The unique need for and special problems associated with providing professional development opportunities for adjuncts teaching developmental courses is researched and discussed. The current trends in the use of adjuncts are compared with best practices and position statements in the field of developmental education. The development and utilization of in-house resources is cited as one approach to minimizing costs. The utilization of online professional resources are proposed as another low-cost avenue for promotion of professional development, and the appendix provides an extensive, updated listing of online developmental education resources. In conclusion, it is recommended that institutional policies and practices reflect the need for the best prepared college educators to work with the least prepared college students.
