Each Winter Institute is part of a series
of annual, weeklong, intensive programs of presentations,
small group mentoring, Special Interest Group meetings (SIGs),
a computer lab, and collegial dialogue on a theme relating
to some aspect of learning assistance. Limited to 60 participants,
the Winter Institutes are based on a teaching/learning philosophy
created by Frank L Christ. Winter Institutes are designed
to provide participants with optimal learning experiences
that can be translated into practical actions when participants
return to their institutions.
From
1992 to 2003, the Winter Institutes have been sponsored
by the University Learning Center of the University of Arizona
and held in Tucson during the first week of January. In
1998, Paradise Valley Community College Learning Support
Center became a Winter Institute co-sponsor.
In 2005, the Winter Institute began a new series at the
University of Texas/Austin with Alan
Constant as its host and director and Frank
Christ as Co-director.
The
2006 Winter Institute held at the University of Texas, Austin
marked the 25th Institute in the ongoing series of institutes
for learning support center directors and staff. This was
the last year that Frank Christ was associated with the
Institutes as a Co-director.
In 2008, the Winter
Institute moved from the UTA campus to The
Crossings, a wellness spa and meeting venue in Austin.
The new co-directors with the director, Alan Constant, were
Darcy Barrick, and Pamela Way from the UTA Learning center.
