Welcome
to the only web portal dedicated exclusively to Learning
Support Centers in Higher Education.
On this web portal, you can review the history of learning
support centers in higher education along with relevant
definitions of learning assistance. You also can learn about
the history and philosophy of the Winter Institute, considered
by many as the premier professional learning experience
for learning support center personnel. Included on this
portal is program and registration information for the annual
Winter Institute as well as full-text articles based on
past Winter Institute keynote addresses and presentations
In addition, you will find an updated calendar
of conferences that may be useful for learning support center
directors and staff along with an extensive bibliography,
related book and periodical reviews, professional development
courses and degrees, links to related professional association
web sites and listservs -- all focused on the needs of learning
support center directors and their staff.
This
portal hopefully speaks to and updates Leroy Sullivan's
plea made more than 25 years ago in his monumental work
that was a comprehensive source of learning center information,
networking, and dialogue [Sullivan, L.L. (1978). A Guide
to Higher Education Learning Centers in the United States
and Canada. Portsmith, NH: Entelek]
More importantly, we are reaffirming our commitment
to dialogue, networking, and collegiality by echoing the
words of Rick Thoman, Xerox Corporation former President
and CEO: "For all of us to win in the knowledge economy,
we need to unleash the knowledge in our document databases,
use and reuse our past knowledge, find ways to create new
knowledge and then share it across our enterprise."
If
you are a student reading this page, please contact your
campus academic support people to see if they know about
and use this resource. Also, if you are taking an online
course, let your instructor know about the learning and
study strategies resources available here that can be integrated
in his/her online course.
We
hope that you will enjoy and profit from this collection
of learning support center information and that you will
provide us with collegial feedback to make this web portal
more useful for you and your learning support center colleagues.
This
web portal is a joint venture of Paradise Valley Community
College, Rick
