PVCC intends to increase the depth of its partnership with programs supporting the academic achievement of low income and minority students in the area in order to help prepare children for higher education. To do this, PVCC works closely with Palomino's Community Learning Center and Echo Mountain Elementary schools to boost the number of young adult role models of color tutoring or mentoring children. The VISTA members will also work closely with each school and local community organizations to increase the number of adults serving as tutor/mentor role models for K-12 children through PVCC courses such as Art, Biology, Education, Computer, English, Reading, and through PVCC service-learning courses. VISTA members also focus on social services, technology needs, before and after school enrichment activities and arrange ESL and GED classes for parents. The VISTA members concentrate their recruitment efforts for parent and children participants in the lowest income areas of Northeast Phoenix, primarily the Palomino Neighborhood. The VISTA members also help to increase the number of adults enrolled in parenting programs and coordinate tutoring and mentoring of children for adults attending literacy programs and workshops.
Additionally, PVCC and VISTA members have developed a "service-learning leader" program for student leaders, entitled PLAY - Palomino Leadership for Active Youth.
The PLAY Program employs students with prior service-learning and leadership experience and provides them with training and development opportunities to take leadership roles implementing and supporting Palomino's Community Learning Center's service-learning volunteer program.
Finally, VISTA members will advise Palomino community members of health related services, workshops on health issues, and parenting courses. VISTA members work with Scottsdale HealthCare staff at a community health clinic to develop health related workshops and expos.
