Summary:
This session will address the challenges of providing online tutoring in through a college tutoring or learning assistance program. Today, the online environment is becoming a preferred means of communication, especially for Generation Y. Are we ready to meet this new challenge?
Online tutoring programs have begun on college campuses in the past 10 years with mixed success. Are we on the brink of a new wave as students opt for online and blended courses? This session will address the challenges and opportunities of conducting online tutoring within our programs.
It will address the following topics and desired learning outcomes: understanding current trends in the field, research on online tutoring, deciding to offer online tutoring, choices in types of online tutoring services, selecting options, implementing online tutoring, best practices for conducting online tutoring, and evaluating an online tutoring service.
I will draw on research and practice of online tutoring programs. I have conducted online tutoring in our center for over 10 years in various formats. I have also researched and presented on this topic at the Winter Institute and NCLCA pre-conference institute in 2005. The format for this presentation will be lecture, with opportunity for participants to share their experiences with online tutoring. By the end of the session, participants will gain a better understanding of the learning outcomes listed above and be better informed on how they might better implement an online tutoring program in their center.
