HTML File Naming Conventions

Because of the use of different systems to run html code, it is a good practice to follow some basic file-naming conventions:

Experience has shown problems on some systems when spaces or something other than a underline bar are used for spacing in filenames.

It is also easier to remember names if you use only lowercase for all text in filenames and three letters in lowercase as the suffix (i.e., .htm not .html).

If you work on both Macintosh and PC platforms, the old
"8-dot-3" or xxxxxxxx.xxx DOS file-naming convention works best, otherwise, longer names work fine.

Most simple HTML files have filenames which end in .htm or .html for text and .jpg or .jpeg, .gif or .giff or .bmp - note graphic programs may save 3 or 4 letter suffixes in caps (.JPG or GIF).
