Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
& Comments
FAQs:
Are learning preferences a result of experience and environment?
Can they change?
There is evidence to support both inherent and experiential/environmental
effects on learning preferences. Generally, the stronger a person's preference,
the less likely to change. From personal experiences, I have seen persons
without a single strong preference, be able to consciously effect change
toward a desired preference.
Can I use the material/resources on your website, giving
you credit?
Absolutely! You may use anything you find helpful. If I have
a citation with it, you need only cite them. It is a model I became very
excited about when I heard Nelson DuBois research about metacognition
and study skills. The model fit so beautifully into the model of four
quadrants that is used in the 4MAT model for learning preferences. The
characteristics for study strategies even fits within many of the characteristics
of the 4MAT model by Excel,
Inc.
Can I send students to your website?
Please do. I would welcome their feedback as well. One person stated that
I needed more graphics. She said it was content-rich but dry without some
graphics to heighten interest.

Hello!
I came upon your website for the first time today when I did a search
on constructivism + "developmental education". I've just finished
reading all of it. I feel like I've found a bit of a gold mine!
I've spent the last 2-1/2 years teaching 1st semester developmental learning
students in a study skills course. Each semester I've used a different
textbook, not satisfied with any of them. I've considered writing my own
textbook, but that's a major undertaking and I have no interest in reinventing
the proverbial wheel. After reading your model and accompanying material,
I feel like I've found an approach and strategies that I've been looking
for all along. Do you have any textbooks you recommend? articles and/or
resources for the students' use? Can I use the material/resources on your
website, giving you credit?
Thanks so much for what your doing here!

- Chose right brain/left brain.
- Personally interested. Am good in Math and Physics but also have a
strong reactive side.
- In past tests of this type, I have come out in the middle - left=right.
- Curious to see if things have changed. Doing a lot more creative now
than math and science.
- Lo and behold, my right brain score was twice my left brain. Does
it mean anything?
HMMMMMMM
- Did I learn that lifestyle and work can change the relationship? I
don't know. But it made me think!
- Knew a lot of this, because of my education background but gained
new insight.
- Use with students: Test techniques refer them to as well as for math
anxiety.
- Lot of good stuff there.

I am a grateful former student of Nelson DuBois circa 1978. Back then
he talked a lot about Gagne and was a superb teacher and I imagine he
has learned a few things since then. Please tell him a former student
sends his best regards and has changed the "system" a little
bit as he predicted.

"Learning is very personal. "Learning, Your Way" is grounded
in research in metacognition and constructivism. It uses experiences from
workshops, seminars, and best practices over the last 20 years to help
learners assess learning needs and consciously choose strategies to improve
