Kudos!
Congratulations to all for a successful opening of our Spring 2007 semester. I would like to acknowledge and commend all the diligent work accomplished by our front line employees in the Kranitz Student Center and throughout the campus for supporting us in our enrollment processes and the Spring semester start-up.  You have welcomed over 8,371 students to PVCC—a 4.23% increase in our enrollment (1/18/07).  Thank you for your dedication to our students.

County Library
We have recently received an agreement from the Maricopa County regarding the Library property.  Over the next few weeks we will be reviewing this agreement with district personnel. I am very positive that we will be able to satisfactorily work out the details so that this Library becomes a reality for PVCC.  In the interim, a Planning Task Force under the leadership of Bob Bendotti and Ron Bleed will be asked to review all the ideas that were identified last semester by faculty and staff for the County Library.

PVCC Hosts Arizona Community College Association (ACCA)
Next Thursday, January 25, PVCC will host the Arizona Community College Association (ACCA) for their monthly meeting. In attendance will be Arizona community college chancellors and presidents; and Governing Board members and ACCA staff. Please welcome this group to our campus.

PVCC Classes at Ping Manufacturing
PVCC’s Center for Business and Workforce Development recently announced new credit classes which began January 9 and will continue through June 7 at PING Manufacturing. This name may be very familiar to you because PING not only manufactures premium golf clubs, but sponsors televised golf tournaments throughout the U.S. At PING, PVCC is providing three sections of Basic English as a Second Language, and three sections of Phonics. Adjunct faculty members Shannon McGrath and Sharon Meyer will teach 45 employees under the direction of John Nelson, Chair of the English Division.

Campus Facilities
Congratulations to staff members from College Safety, Facilities Services, and Administrative Services – Scott Meek, David Matus, Connie Heit, and Jeanette Saxon. We appreciate their efforts in preparing the new parking lot on the east side of campus.

Ribbon-Cutting
On January 11, the ribbon-cutting celebration at the new L Modular Building was attended by a standing-room-only crowd of 75.  Taking up residence in “L” are the Allied Health programs (Fire Science, Emergency Medical Technology, Paramedic, Nursing and Nurse Assisting), the Athletics program, and the Offices of Facilities Services. While those departments are thrilled with the added space, their students are even happier.

I would like to recognize architects MCCCD Facilities/Planning & Development, and from PVCC faculty, members Karen Fehr; Dan Donahue; Paul Sunder; Rose Dermody; Greg Silcox and his Athletics staff; Vice President Jane Saldana-Talley and her assistant, Jeanette Saxon; David Matus and his Facilities Services staff; Carol Myers and the IRTS staff; and Dr. Julia Devous and the IA staff. A great job, everyone!

Fulbright Scholar Dr. Zahra Tamouh to be PVCC Guest Lecturer
PVCC is honored to welcome Dr. Zahra Tamouh as a regular guest lecturer for our HIS110 World History course. A Professor of History at the University of Mohamed V, in Morocco, she received her PhD. in History from the Sorbonne in Paris, France. Dr. Tamouh’s presence here will provide a great learning opportunity for students both now and in the future.  One of her goals while at PVCC will be to work with Michele Marion on the development of a History of Islam course for the MCCCD course bank.

Our faculty will also benefit from Dr. Tamouh’s visits. As part of the Fulbright scholarship criteria, in April she will host a content-based professional growth session to create a better understanding and awareness of the Islamic world.

MCCCD Governing Board Election Wins
PVCC congratulates Linda B. Rosenthal on her recent election as Governing Board President. Dr. Donald Campbell was also reelected to the Governing Board, and will serve as the secretary in 2007. PVCC plans to welcome Colleen Clark, another new Governing Board member, to our campus in the near future.

Congratulations Dr. Sheets
Dr. Rick Sheets, Director of Learning Support Center, is now President-Elect and Conference Chair of the College Reading and Learning Association.

Onstage
Performing Arts Coordinator Richard Schultz has won a role as The Vicar in the upcoming Theater Works production of The Enchanted Cottage, a romantic fantasy. This will be the first time in nine years Schultz has appeared on the stage. “My MFA is in directing, but I wanted to keep in touch with the acting side,” Schultz explained. “It was time.” If you want to cheer him on, The Enchanted Cottage runs from March 16 through April 1, at the new Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.

Welcome Adjunct Faculty
We welcome our new and continuing adjunct faculty members at PVCC. On January 11, twenty-one new adjunct faculty participated in an adjunct faculty orientation. Thank you to Patricia Marchok, Adjunct Faculty Support Coordinator, for providing our adjunct faculty assistance in professional development and information about the college resources available to them.

Learning Week
According to Michaelle Shadburne, Manager of Organizational Development, the Spring 2007 Learning Week events, held January 8-12, featured 29 learning sessions organized around our strategic issues and student engagement strategies. This year saw the highest ever attendance totals for a Spring Learning Week, with attendance of 453. Thank you to the over 30 PVCC employees who facilitated a learning session. And thanks to Michaelle and the Employee and Organizational Learning team for doing such a great job!

Innovation of the Year
Once again it is time to nominate PVCC colleagues for the 2006-2007 Innovation of the Year Awards.  I would like to again ask your support by encouraging members of your division to submit an application.  This year, the nominations will need to be submitted to Michaelle Shadburne by Friday, January 26.
