College Leadership Council: MCCD/PVCC Financial
Outlook Conversation
The CLC meeting held on February 15, to which all employees were
invited to attend, featured an interactive presentation and discussion
with Vice Chancellor of Business Services Debra Thompson. The topic of
this meeting was MCCD and PVCC Financial Outlook Conversation. Vice

the cost efficiency/reduction options that are being proposed. PVCC
Vice President’s Dale and Conover and Dean Mary Lou Mosley, as well as
faculty member Jeane Franco, chair of the Budget Development Steering

employees who participated in this informative and lively conversation
addressing how the District and the College can work together to
understand and proactively meet the financial challenges that lay ahead
of us. To receive a copy of the presentation and handouts please
contact Michaelle Shadburne, E&OL Coordinator at michaelle.shadburne@pvmail.maricopa.edu
or 7-6778.
American Heart
Association's Heart Walk
It’s still not to late to join our PVCC teams on Saturday, March 1 at
the Tempe Beach Park for the 2008 American Heart Association’s Heart
Walk. Choose between the 5K American Heart Walk or the 1-mile
Stroke Walk. The Walk is part of Maricopa’s Wellness Program, and our
Maricopa Community Colleges goal for this year’s walk is $40,000.
Registration for the events begins Saturday morning at 8:00am, or you

Club Ed Book Fair
We are proud of the work of students, faculty and staff who have been
selling used paperbacks, popular fiction and children’s books in the
lower KSC to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for
Life. The
Club Ed students, all of whom are education majors, will also be
assisting in activities for younger children of parents who are running
in the Relay, through the Kidsville program. A special thank
you to
Harriet Betts and Debby Voll and all those who came out to support the
2008 Club Ed Book Fair.
PVCC Hosts Phoenix
Symphony String Orchestra
For the fifth year in a row we are pleased to host the Phoenix Symphony
as part of the college’s honors program. This free educational concert,
to be held in the CPA on Tuesday, March 4, at 1:30pm, will be conducted
by Lawrence Golan, and will feature works by Bach, Mozart and
Tchaikovsky. The concert is a joint offering of the Phoenix Symphony’s
Education and Community Engagement Program, Symphony Connections, in
partnership with Maricopa Community Colleges to provide opportunities
for students to interact with professional musicians. For further
information please contact the CPA box office at 7-7738.
Seven Revolutions - Scanning The World Out to 2025
This is a busy week at PVCC as we also host a web cast, Seven
Revolutions - Scanning The World Out to 2025, sponsored by
the Society of College and University Planning (SCUP) on Tuesday, March
4 from 11:45am – 2pm in the Southeast Corner of the PVCC Library. Eric
R. Peterson, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and
International Studies, will be the presenter. The goal of the Seven
Revolutions project is to “promote strategic, forward-looking
thinking on long-term trends among current and future leaders.” There
will be a live question and answer session at the end of the web cast.
I urge everyone to take advantage of this unique experience as we
continue in the development of our long-term organizational goals and
objectives. The exciting and provocative Seven Revolutions
web cast is an excellent way for college employees to prepare for the
strategic plan conversation that will occur during my two upcoming
President’s Advance meetings. (Thursday, March 2, at 1pm and Friday,
March 28 at 9:30am) If you plan to attend Seven Resolutions please
RSVP to Michaelle Shadburne at michaelle.shadburne@pvmail.maricopa.edu

PVCC Innovation of the Year Award Nominee
This year, PVCC will submit the iStart Smart student success program as
the college nominee to compete for the District-wide Paul M. Pair
Innovation of the Year Award. This annual excellence in innovation
competition recognizes a team of employees who have designed and
implemented a significant innovation that has had a positive impact on
the education of students. A majority of the college departments and
employees were involved directly or indirectly with this program. Other
employees, while not directly involved, provided the moral support that
was needed to initiate this program. As a result, the entire PVCC
community is to be recognized for this innovation. Congratulations PVCC!

Early College
Update
Thanks to our Learning Connections collaborative effort involving PVUSD
and our high school districts, the Early College Program is
ready for Fall 2008. The Early College Program
is designed to increase the number of Arizonans who earn a bachelors
degree, an important factor in our state’s economic future. Early
College students will be “college-ready” and selected by their
participating high schools. Each student is placement tested prior to
admission into our Early College. Students who test into
developmental courses will not be admitted into our Early
College Program.
Students who enter the Early College Program will be jointly
enrolled in PVCC and their high school in their junior year. Mornings
will be spent completing their prescribed high school courses at their
current school site, and in the afternoon they will attend PVCC.
Students who successfully complete the Early College Program
will graduate from high school with both their high school diploma and
their 35 hour Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) certificate. Early
College graduates
will be automatically admitted to any of our three state universities
with 35 transfer credits. This exciting program, piloted with PVUSD and
our other high school colleagues, will provide a wonderful opportunity
to valley students. Special thanks to our PVCC team, co-chaired by Dean
Shirley Green and Vice President Bob Bendotti for all their
collaborative efforts.
Construction Limits
Access
We are making important steps to link the college with our new ‘Q’
building. The new pathway was begun on Monday, February 25. The
construction zone for the new pathway to ‘Q’ building and the baseball
field will temporarily obstruct the inner loop road and some sidewalk
access. In addition, the west door to the Fitness Center and the
southeast edge of West parking will be closed. The second row in East
parking has been reserved for Silver Sneakers and Senior citizens. We
thank you for your patience and cooperation in this matter.
