Learning Grants
I am pleased to share with you that PVCC has been awarded a total of $22,016 in Learning Grants for the 07-08 academic year.  Five PVCC Learning Grant proposals were funded as a result of the MCLI review process. Congratulations to the following awardees:

Cinthya Ippoliti (Library) - $4416, for “Information Literacy Partnership Program.”
Sonia Valle (Dance) - $5000, for “Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman,” and an additional $3683 for “East Meets West: A Look at Asian Modern Dance.”
Chris Scinto (Music) - $5237, for “An Examination of the Music, Music Theories and Musical Pedagogy of American Master Composer James Tenney
Gary Smith (Choices) - $3680, for “Student Success Choices Guide.”

LERN Recognition of Continuing Education
Congratulations to Chris Hunt, Marketing Assistant, and the Continuing Education team for being honored with two awards by the Learning Resources Network (LERN), an international association in lifelong learning.  PVCC was honored for excellence in Generational Programming for its summer Kids College program designed to foster children’s skills in leadership, communication and goal achievement.  PVCC was also honored for excellence in the Continuing Education Web Site Design for dramatic and effective design elements which increase accessibility, readability and interest for site visitors.  Our Continuing Education program was selected from a field of more than 100 entries from four countries.  LERN’s primary criterion in selecting exemplary programs was the quality of being at the leading edge of the field of lifelong learning.

County Library
I would like to update you on the progress of the County Library Project.  The following item has been added to the Governing Board agenda for their March 27, 2007 meeting:  A recommendation that the Governing Board approve the purchase of the North Central Regional Library Building from the Maricopa County Library District. The purchase price is $4 Million plus closing costs. Source of funding for the purchase is the 2004 Maricopa Community Colleges General Obligation Bond.

Please note that the purchase of this property is contingent upon the finalization of a contract with terms and conditions agreeable to both parties (approval by County Library Board and County Board of Supervisors).  Following our Governing Board's approval of this purchase, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will vote on the agreement.

This building is 65,929 square feet in size and sits on 7.848 acres. The terms of the purchase and sale include the Maricopa County Library District’s use of 10,892 square feet of space until June 30, 2011 as a branch library and the assumption of an existing lease of approximately 9,300 square feet to the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center charter school until July 31, 2013.

A college Feasibility Task Force has been formed and will be charged with making recommendations for optimal use of the building.  In our three open campus forums over the last few months, suggestions have been made by many faculty and staff for use of this building including: general purpose classrooms, occupational and student service programs, alternative delivery programs, and offices and labs.  Space will be provided for academic partnerships including those with our high schools and universities.  Other campus functions will be relocated to support PVCC's commitment to student success.

At this time we are very pleased that the agreement with Maricopa County is moving along in a positive spirit, and we anticipate that the outcome will be good for students and our community.  I will keep you informed as we know more about this project.

President’s Advance Follow-up
As noted during the recent President's Advance, the Employee and Organizational Learning Team will host two President's Advance follow-up sessions to the view the two provocative videos that were featured in Bob Bendotti's presentation.  The two videos will be shown and then informally discussed by participants. The first video, A New Vision for and Interdependent Planet, features Dr. Peter Senge who is the Director of the Center for Organizational Learning at the Sloan School of Management at MIT.   This session will be on Wednesday, April 11 at 12-1:30 p.m. in KSC-208.  The second video, Powerful  Times:  Rising to the Challenge of Our Uncertain World, features Eamonn Kelly, the CEO of Global Business Network (the renowned futures network and scenario strategy consultancy).  This session will be on Tuesday, May 1 from 12-1:30 p.m., in M225.

Bring your lunch and enjoy what promises to be a wonderful opportunity to think in new ways about "Co-Creating PVCC's Future."
