Relay for Life
An exceptionally moving program was held on Friday night, here at PVCC,
as part of this year’s Relay for Life. Close to 600 luminarias lit the
night on Shoenhair Field, and the luminaria challenge brought in $700
in support of the North Valley Relay. This year over 445 registered
team participants making up 35 teams raised a current total of $48,460
for the American Cancer Society. We gratefully acknowledge the many
hours of planning and hard work that went into this overnight event. In
particular we would like to thank Jennifer Strickland, Chris Hunt,
Heather Kruse, Norma Chandler and the many others who made Relay for
Life a success this year.
Phoenix Smoke
Detector Awareness Walk
On Saturday, April 5, the PVCC-PC Fire Operations Academy participated
in the semiannual Phoenix Smoke Detector Awareness Walk, sponsored by
the City of Phoenix Mayor’s Office and the Phoenix Fire Department. Two
instructors and 44 students walked door to door to bring smoke detector
awareness and fire safety to the community of Sunnyslope. Approximately
500 homes were visited, 175 smoke detectors installed and more than 350
batteries replaced. This was the fourth such event for the PVCC-PC Fire
Operations Academy, which was recognized by Mayor Phil Gordon and
Phoenix Fire Chief Bob Khan for providing the greatest number of
volunteers to this community life safety event. Thanks to faculty
member Paul Sunder and all the volunteers who gave of their time and
expertise.
Wellness Fest
Activities
Wellness Fest continues on campus, with fitness walks scheduled
throughout the rest of the month. It’s still not too late to register
and be randomly assigned to a team. The Mobile On-site Mammography Unit
this week provided a convenient opportunity for many to have this
important screening done. Next week, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday,
April 25 in the KSC 185, take advantage of an “Introduction to
Meditation” class open to the public. For more information, call Donna
Mosher, 602-787-6540.

number, with one form to fill out, one set of hours and one Manager
(Loretta Mondragon) to contact. The combined help desk will be located
on the west side of A building, where IRTS is now. This change is
designed to provide a less confusing, more efficient technical support
experience.

Teleconference
Between PVCC and the Netherlands
On Tuesday, April 15, students from Professor Hedy Fossenkemper’s
Computer Information Systems (CIS) 105 class teleconferenced with
Professor Harry Viscaal’s CIS class from the Netherlands. The
teleconference was a result of PVCC’s teacher exchange program in which
professors Fossenkemper and Viscaal participated last year. For more
than an hour, students chatted back and forth about IT as well as “Hip
Hop” music and Shaquille O’Neal’s joining the Phoenix Suns. This
teleconference is an exciting example of the globalization of our
college curriculum in action.

American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), Esther Schon, along
with two other community college representatives, presented a program
titled “Making Service Learning Happen for Everyone.” This presentation

students, faculty, staff and the local community. Esther is completing
the third year of the Project Reach grant.

Women's Golf Update
The Puma’s women golfers placed second at the Chandler/Gilbert
tournament at Toka Sticks golf course in Chandler. This is another huge
step toward securing a berth in the 2008 NJCAA National Tournament in
Daytona Beach, Florida, in May. Alex Ward and Kendall Martin received
individual medals (Third Place and Fifth Place respectively). Only one
tournament remains in the regular season, at Aguila golf course in two
weeks, and we wish our athlete’s good luck in their final game.

Awards, Artists of Promise
