Capital Development
Update
PVCC’s County Library Feasibility Task Force meets May 3 to continue
the work on refining the programs and services that will go into our
new building. The Governing Board approved the purchase of the County
Library at their meeting March 27, 2007 followed by approval by the
Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.
At the April 24, 2007 Governing Board meeting, an agreement was
approved for the sale of five acres of real property at 60th Street and
Carefree Highway for the Desert Foothills YMCA and Community Center
project. Following the conclusion of a successful fundraising effort,
the YMCA is planning to construct a YMCA branch facility and
multigenerational community center on the property. A separate
agreement is under review whereby the YMCA will build, on behalf of the
college, an Educational Center of approximately 10,000 square feet that
will house six classrooms, an office, conference/ work/storage space
and parking, The land, building, parking and other capital
improvements of the PVCC North Education Center will remain owned and
operated by our District.
Intercollegiate
Baseball
After a two-year planning and approval process, PVCC will implement
intercollegiate baseball, beginning Fall 2008. When play begins in
Spring 2009, intercollegiate baseball is expected to draw approximately
fifty to sixty full time students competing for twenty-five roster
spots once play. Program implementation depends upon the field
construction cost coming in on budget. Funds for the field construction
will come from Fund 2, and have been generated through several years of
set-asides for this capital project. A special thanks to Greg Silcox
for his work in developing this program.
Project Ayuda
Paula Vaughn, Director of Service Learning, indicates that MCCCD was
renewed for the Project Ayuda 07-08 continuation grant. For the 07-08
program year, Service Learning will receive $93,000, an increase of
$43,000 from the current year. Congratulations to Paula and the Service
Learning staff for this achievement. The AmeriCorps Project Ayuda --
which means “help” in Spanish -- provides service opportunities for
college students and community members in order to strengthen the
communities of Phoenix and Tucson.
Relay
for Life
Congratulations to Chair Chris Hunt, Mike Ho, Heather Kruse and other
PVCC staff, students, and community members for hosting an
extraordinary Relay for Life event on campus April 13, 2007. The third
annual event raised over $56,000 for the American Cancer Society. Your
participation makes a difference in the lives of many people touched by
cancer.
