PVCC athletes score
big
The National Junior College Athletic Association announced that PVCC
earned the 12th spot in the Pepsi Cup standings. PVCC earned 84 points
for the year, making it the top Maricopa Community College and the
second Arizona two-year college in the standings. Of the total points,
PV women earned 50, and the men 34. Congratulations to our star
athletes and their coaches!
Fall
enrollment update
Given the latest enrollment numbers, we would like to provide some
insight as to why at this time it is difficult to compare 2007 with
2006. There are several reasons for the enrollment difference.
1. There are currently more than 500 students scheduled for upcoming
iStartSmart new student orientation sessions. Many of them will be
full-time students (i.e. enrolling for four or more classes).
2. On June 15, the college, as part of a district-wide effort to align
fee delete dates to better accommodate the tuition payment plan,
conducted our first fee delete. In previous years, the first delete was
not done until early August. This year, approximately 800 students were
deleted in June for non-payment of fees.
3. We may still be seeing the residual effects of Proposition 300, as a
noticeable number of ESL courses were canceled this summer.
Marketing efforts
The following is a list of marketing strategies being undertaken
between now and the beginning of our fall semester to address
enrollment issues.
1. PVCC will be participating in two Saturday district-wide
Registration Days - August 11 and 18, 8:00 - 12:00 noon. These will
also be marketed county-wide in a collaborative effort. Included in
these marketing strategies will be cable TV and radio spots, ads in the
College Times and on the District website, and additional press
releases.
2. All of the students who are deleted each Wednesday, who have
current phone numbers, are being contacted and invited to re-enroll.
3. Prospective high school students in our database will be contacted
again.
4. All prospective high school students have all been invited to
participate in iStartSmart through a post card mail out.
5. Students formerly enrolled at PVCC Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 and not
enrolled in Fall 2007 will be contacted and invited to enroll.
Campus projects
During this summer our college is undergoing a number of major
maintenance and facilities projects. David Matus and Bob Metevier
report on these ongoing and completed projects:
1- The roofing project of KSC building is completed.
2- Installation of speed humps in East side parking lot nearest the
golf course.
3- Reconfiguration of irrigation controls to better serve all the
vegetation on campus.
4- Carpeting will be replaced in the hallways and south half of E
Building and in KSC this fall.
5- The landscaping of the PAC will be completed in early August.
6- Rewiring of interior walkway lighting (K, H and G buildings).
7- Replacement of pump at mirror pond.
8- Preventive maintenance- ADA doors, all motors, HVAC equipment,
grounds keeping equipment, fire plugs, etc;
9- Installation of water fountains at Track near bleachers and near
hand ball courts.
10- Installation of new hand wash station in child development center.
11- Maintenance of high voltage transformer.
12-Update the security for IRTS and A building.
13- Establishing maintenance and custodial procedures at the George
Campbell Library.
SIS implementation
During the month of July, PVCC's SIS College Implementation Team (CIT)
is engaged in a number of significant activities as we prepare for the
October implementation of the new student system. Staff in the areas of
admissions and records, financial aid, academic advising, and fiscal
services are engaged in "end-user" training every Friday afternoon.
College staff are also engaged in integration testing (testing all of
the processes and systems that make up SIS); automated degree audit
testing; and ensuring that all of our "shadow system" (local data
bases) have appropriate connectivity to SIS. For more information,
please visit the project web site at http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/nss/

Changes
Effective Monday, July 9, Greg Silcox, in addition to his duties as
Athletics Director, will serve as interim director of Academic
Advising, replacing Donna Simon, who has left the college. Greg
previously served 15 years as an academic advisor at GCC (while serving
as head women's basketball coach). At PVCC he is responsible for
developing a model student academic success program for student
athletes involving a significant academic advising component. Given
that Advising is immersed in a number of significant projects
(iStartSmart and SIS implementation), we will move forward with this
interim leadership through late fall semester in order to get through
SIS implementation before we appoint a permanent director.
To assist Greg, Beth Guerra will assume supervisory responsibility for
the Information Center. As you know Beth formerly served as a student
services specialist at the Information Center. Please welcome Beth and
Greg in their new roles.
Jacqueline Battistone has moved from her position as Office Coordinator
in Academic Advising to Program Advisor, Service Learning and Honors.
I am pleased to inform you that Kurt W. Conover has agreed to serve as
the Interim Vice President of Administrative Services, replacing Dr.
Jane Saldana-Talley. He comes to us from Mesa Community College, where
as Dean of Administrative Services, he was responsible for planning,
directing and evaluating fiscal and administrative services for the
multi-campus college and its four off-site locations. Before arriving
at MCC, he held various positions within the Maricopa Community College
District and the Maricopa Skill Center. We thank him and Mesa Community
College’s Interim President Wayne Giles and Vice President Jerry Davis
for their support in our transition time as we begin our search for a
permanent replacement.

Dances
with Coyotes
PVCC alumna Kia Smith (who graces the cover of our fall class schedule)
just added another first to her resumé—she has been named to the
cheerleading/dance squad, “The Pack,” of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey
team. Kia, who studied dance at PVCC, says she is honored to be named
to the elite group. According to the Coyotes press release, these
young ladies will “practice twice a week, perform at all home games,
and serve as goodwill ambassadors for the organization in the
community.” The group of 18 was chosen by audition, which included
dance, their own choreography, public speaking, and poise under
pressure.
Cordially,
Mary Kay
President
