Chrystle Hall,

Center Director; and Jennifer Strickland,
Instructional Technologist, hosted a successful Summer
Technology Fun Week July 10 through 14. Forty-eight
participants attended 14 sessions. The most popular included
Dreamweaver, Blackboard, SoftChalk and Photoshop Elements. Thank you to
the IRTS team for continuing to keep us technologically savvy.
PVCC placed first in the eight-week District Exercise
Challenge, eHealthCompete, which ended July 17. June
Hawkins took first place, with strong finishes by team members
Mary Ann Maher (second place), Barb
Henderson (third place), Sandra Beeman, Cheryl Boron,
Ryan Martin, Vicki Sutton and Lori Walk.
Keep up the good work, team!
Adjunct faculty member and professional flutist Nancy Sowers
led 28 PVCC flute students in a classical music concert July 27 at our
beautiful Center for the Performing Arts. The concert, which had 100
attendees, was the culmination of Nancy’s annual summer Flute
Choir class. The Center also played host to a wonderful
performance by the Puma Jazz Band on July 28, 2006.
ABOUT OUR
STUDENTS
Even during the summer, PVCC students continue to gain recognition…
Congratulations to former PVCC Track & Field team member Tod
Rodenbaugh. A four-time National Junior College Athletic
Association champion pole vaulter, Tod recently was recruited by
Arizona State University to join its Track & Field and Cross
Country teams. Tod will start as a junior this fall at ASU.
Phi Theta Kappa members Marina Haley and Elizabeth
Scala were honored with $1,000 Coca-Cola Scholars
Foundation scholarships, while $1,500 USA Funds
scholarships were awarded to Angela Ellsworth, Sofia
Kandova, Sara Kehl, Gloria Mauter, Candice Santiago and Daniel
Van Tienderen. Marina and Elizabeth were featured in the Arizona
Republic’s “Jobs Well Done” column July 12.
James Latham, Business &
Information Technology Division adjunct faculty, led Phi Beta
Lambda Club members to Nashville, Tenn., to attend the 2006
National Leadership Conference. Anthony Baskovitz,
Josh Brox, Manny Dorado, Dean Prinsloo and Robert
Roshau represented PVCC. Josh, Dean and Robert placed second
in the Business Plan Project.
Congratulations to our students, Club Adviser Bahman Maneshni,
Jim, and other faculty members of the Business/IT Division who work
with and support these students.
ABOUT OUR CAMPUS
I am pleased to announce a new collaboration with Paradise
Valley Unified School District in piloting our “First
College” initiative. This program is designed for
college-bound high school juniors and seniors who wish to get a
jump-start on their higher education goals by taking general education
classes at PVCC concurrently with their high school enrollment. We
realize that some students already have been doing this on their own;
but, until now, we have not given a name to these endeavors. The
program presently is modeled after other “Early” and “Middle College”
programs across the country. This fall, we are piloting the initiative
with PVUSD’s Paradise Valley High School and North
Canyon High School, targeting about 600 “early dismissal”
students. An information session for prospective students is scheduled
for Friday, August 4. I would like to extend a special thank you to the
committee for championing this effort at PVCC and getting it off the
ground so swiftly.
In conjunction with MCCCD’s Maricopa Week activities
August 7 through 12, PVCC will host an Open House for
the community from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 10. A one-stop shop for
prospective and returning students, the Open House will highlight
PVCC’s classes and services, including credit and continuing education
classes, Fitness Center membership, and Center for Performing Arts
events. Information tables will be set up on the first floor of the KSC
building, and staff will conduct campus tours. The festivities will
include prize drawings and free refreshments. A giant clock cold-air
balloon at 34th Street and Union Hills will welcome students, parents
and community members to campus. Please join us for this event and
spread around extra big PVCC smiles that day!
The Recruitment Task Force has been hard at work this
summer putting into place 16 new marketing and recruitment
efforts. These strategic efforts include promotion of the new Career
Focus magazine; creation and distribution of three direct-mail
postcards; personal calls and e-mails to former students and prospects
from our Contact Center; and the August 10 Open House. Congratulations
to the committee for its diligent and creative work this summer. We are
hopeful for positive results this fall.
In June, the Institutional
Advancement office presented a Branding Workshop as
the first step in developing a comprehensive identity for the college.
Twenty-four participants from a cross-section of the college’s many
constituencies and stakeholders – including faculty, staff,
administrators, students, alumni and community/business leaders –
helped bring to light our college’s perceptions and unique attributes.
This research will form the foundation for our college’s brand/identity
presentations. A special thank-you to all the participants for their
commitment, candor and passion; their contributions absolutely will
help illuminate our path to the future.
Our very own Patti Marsh, Business/IT Division chair,
Business & Information Technology, was featured in the Northeast
Phoenix Independent discussing the new 2+2 Partnership
program with the Northern Arizona University College of
Business Administration. We are so pleased to continue our
partnership with NAU to offer Valley students the ability to complete a
four-year business degree from NAU on our campus.
Our fall 2006 semester begins Monday, August 14, at 8 a.m. with the All-Employee
Buffet Breakfast followed by the Convocation
for all employees. We are fortunate to have Dr. Kay McClenney,
nationally respected academic leader, author and presenter, join us as
our keynote speaker.
As we continue to beat the heat with record-breaking temperatures,
remember to stay cool indoors. One way to avoid the high temperatures
outside is to attend Learning Week sessions Monday
through Thursday, August 14 through 18. Employee &
Organizational Learning will host sessions on the Spring
2007 Student Success Pilot Project, Student Engagement Best Practices
and Learning Support Services for Adjunct Faculty. For the
full Learning Week schedule, visit www.pvc.maricopa.edu/eol/
or contact Michaelle Shadburne, Manager of Organizational Development,
at 787-6778.
I look forward to seeing you soon on our campus. Welcome!
Dr. Mary Kay Kickels
President
