Welcome back!
It is with great pleasure that I welcome students and staff to PVCC for
our fall semester. May this 2007-2008 academic year be a successful
year for all members of our PVCC learning community.
Learning
Week a big success
I would like to thank everyone who helped out during Learning Week,
especially PVCC’s Center for Employee and Organizational Learning,
which offered 30 employee learning sessions. These sessions featured
such topics as student engagement, assessment, and instructional
technology. Over 425 employees attended these learning sessions. I
know you all worked very hard to make this week a success. In
particular, I want to acknowledge those who prepared for and presented
at these sessions. I appreciate your time and dedication.
Blood
Drive
As a reminder, United Blood Services will be here 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, August 29, and 11:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, August 30. Go to
www.bloodhero.com and enter the
sponsor code “pvcc” to set up your own
appointment; sign up at the Blood Drive Table; or call Ryan Martin at
797-7242. As a special treat, those who donate 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. will
receive a free lunch at the Paradise Barbeque.
Puma
Golf Classic
Time to loosen up that golf swing. On Saturday, September 8, PVCC hosts
its third Annual Puma Golf Classic at Rancho Mañana Golf Course, in
Cave Creek. Proceeds from the tournament will be used to provide
scholarship dollars and books to eligible PVCC student-athletes. Our
previous tournaments have raised more than $10,000.
The Puma Classic is a four-player scramble, and group prizes will be
given for first, second and third place teams; individual prizes will
also be awarded. Tournament play includes green and cart fees, range
balls, player services, and a post-match lunch and beverages. You can
get involved as a single player for $85, and sponsorships are also
available at the $100, $150, and $400 level. For more information,
check out the tournament web site at
www.pvc.maricopa.edu/athletics/pumaclassic.html
or call 602-787-7173.
Career
Expo 2007
Mark your calendars. With 10 other Maricopa Community Colleges, PVCC
will take part in Career Expo 2007 on Oct. 6, at University of Phoenix
Stadium, in Glendale. The Expo will feature exhibitors representing
educational institutions, business and industry. Activities will
include guest speakers, demonstrations, presentations, and information
booths. Students, parents and community members are encouraged to
attend to learn about job opportunities and the skills needed for
career success in the 21st century. For more information, see the
Expo’s web site at www.ctecareerexpo.org.

MFI interns
Congratulations to PVCC’s Roel Evangelista who has been chosen to be a
2007-2008 Intern for the Maricopa Faculty Internship (MFI) program. The
program is a nine-month internship designed to provide teaching
experiences, mentoring, and professional growth opportunities that
result in knowledge and skills necessary to better prepare candidates
to seek competitive employment in a residential teaching position at
the Maricopa Community Colleges. The focus of the program is on
learning the multiple roles of faculty in the community college. Roel’s
mentors will be Kevin Arps and John Nelson. We are very pleased that
Roel was selected for this program and happy that he is at PVCC!
Latinos
in Leadership Roles Symposium
The National Community College Hispanic Council, an affiliate council
of AACC, will hold its 12th Annual Leadership Symposium, A New Vision
for Community Colleges: Latinos in Leadership Roles, September 20-22,
2007 at the Pointe South Mountain Resort. The symposium promotes the
interest and success of Hispanics in the two-year college sector and is
being hosted by the Maricopa Community Colleges. Staff and students
from PVCC are encouraged to attend. For more information and
registration details, you can contact Tracy Newell at admin@ncchc.com
or visit http://www.ncchc.com.

New carpeting on its way
This is advance notice that new carpeting will be ready for
