Puma Classic is Above Par
The fifth annual Puma Classic Golf Tournament gets a shotgun start at 8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12
at Rancho Manana Golf Club in Cave Creek. The tournament raises funds to support tuition and book scholarships for PVCC student-athletes. The entry fee is $85 per person, including the round of golf, cart, door prizes and an all-you-can-eat barbecue lunch at the Buffalo Chip Saloon. Players of all skill levels are welcome. The event raised more than $7,000 last year. For tournament information, call 602-787-7173 or go to the Puma Classic Web site.
 
PVCC in the News
  • Dr. Mary Lou Mosley, vice president of Academic Affairs, was featured in a recent news story about PVCC’s growing enrollment by CBS 5 reporter Lisa Kelly. It also compared the costs of college tuition. The clip includes interviews of PVCC students Mark Smith and Claire Johnson.
    If you missed the airing of the segment, titled Arizona Community Colleges Expect Packed Classes, it can still be viewed on the news channel’s Web site.

  • The opening of PVCC at Black Mountain was featured in the Aug. 19 issue of the Sonoran News with quotes from Jacalyn Askin, vice president of Administrative Services, about the college’s partnership with the YMCA and Foothills Community Foundation. The article includes photos
    of new students registering for classes at Black Mountain.

  • The Arizona Republic also highlighted PVCC’s Honors Program in an Aug. 25 article on the front page of the Valley and State section, titled Community Colleges See Spike in Fall Enrollment. In the print version, freshman Benjamin McKinnon also was quoted in a sidebar about the value of attending PVCC.

  • Scott Meek, director of Public Safety, is featured in the August episode of Maricopa Now discussing carpooling and trip reduction at PVCC. Thirty PVCC employees participated in the carpool program last year, saving money on gas, commuting time and searching for a parking space. PVCC has 10 preferred carpool parking spaces on campus for employees who sign up
    to share a ride to work. To apply to be a carpooling team, pick up a “Request for Preferred Parking” form in the Public Safety Office.

Krawcheck Earns National Nurse Educator Certification
Jennifer Krawcheck is the first nursing faculty at PVCC to pass the National League for Nursing’s Certified Nurse Educator exam. The CNE distinction recognizes excellence and expertise in the advanced specialty of nursing education.

“She is an outstanding instructor and leader in nursing education,” says Rose Dermody, PVCC Nursing Program chair. “The certification is a mark of professionalism and communicates to students, peers and the academic and health care communities that the highest standards of excellence are being met.”

Gerlach and Dreier Coach Summer Collegiate Leagues
PVCC assistant coaches Troy Gerlach and Thom Dreier didn’t take a vacation from baseball after PVCC’s inaugural baseball season. They spent the summer coaching development collegiate league teams in New York and Alaska. Gerlach was an assistant coach for the Amsterdam Mohawks, which won the 2009 New York Collegiate Baseball League championship. Dreier was the head coach of the Anchorage Bucs, which finished second in the Alaska Baseball League.

Puma Women's Soccer Ranks Nationally
For the fourth straight year, the Pumas Women's Soccer program achieved top ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s first poll of the season. Ranked 13th in the nation, the women have the potential to compete for a region championship, says Coach Kacey Bingham.

“We have several good returners complemented by a very talented incoming class, and that should once again make for a great year,” she says. The team welcomes 17 new recruits.

The Puma women kick off the 2009 season at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The home opener is at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5 against Cochise Community College. The full women’s soccer schedule is posted on the PVCC Athletics Web site.

Men's Soccer Ready for Season Opener

Coach Steven Green and his men’s soccer squad hit the road for its 2009 season opener at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 2 at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. The team has five new recruits who are expected to be a positive addition to the program. The men take the home field for the first time against Yavapai Community College at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 5. The men’s soccer schedule is posted on the PVCC Athletics Web site.

Projects Update
 
Q Building Demolition Underway
Demolition has begun on 10,000 square feet in the southwest area of the Q Building, which will be renovated to house the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center Charter School. Facilities Services Manager Bob Metivier anticipates the new construction will be completed in late December or early January. The charter school currently is housed in the northwest section of the building.

Overflow Parking Lot Now Open
A temporary parking lot on the south side of E Building is now open to handle any overflow of cars
at PVCC. Public Safety opens the lot as needed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
