Strategic Planning Team
The Strategic Planning Committee met August 24, 2007.  The committee will be working to develop a strategic plan for the period 2008-2012.  The committee has been expanded to include all division chairs and representatives from all employee groups, in addition to the VPs, deans, and representatives from key functional areas. Faculty Senate President Jeff Lace will be co-chair of the committee with Laurie Pemberton. The committee agreed to work in small groups to review environmental scan information and report to the whole committee on items they find important and relevant to PVCC’s strategic planning process. Those groups are: Economy/Workforce; Education; External Stakeholders; Internal Stakeholders; Social, Political, and Legislation. The groups will report their findings at the September and October meetings. To find out more about the Strategic Planning meetings, visit http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/ie/planning.html.

Awards for Institutional Advancement
Congratulations to our award-winning Institutional Advancement Office.   They were notified Tuesday by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (an affiliate council for the American Association of Community Colleges) that PVCC’s entries in four categories had garnered District 6’s prestigious NCMPR Medallion Awards.

I am pleased that our community college peers—those who work in college advancement across the region—have recognized the work of PVCC’s  IA Office as ranking among the finest.  Among the submissions honored were the 2006 Report to the Community (annual report), and our 2006-7 Recruitment Program.  The awards will be presented in Reno, Nevada on Friday, September 28.

Faculty & Staff News

New advisors
Our appreciation goes out to the many faculty and staff who will be serving as advisors for various student groups during the fall 2007 semester. Among them are: Tim Marchisotto, advisor to College Republicans; Kris Guffey, advisor to Human Services Club; Vaswati Ghosh, advisor to International Students Association; Jeanette Saxon, advisor to OIKOS/Environmental Club; and Richard Schultz, advisor to PRIDE (G.L.B.T. Student Organization). Advisors are still needed for the Writers Guild, Mind Body Spirit Association, and a co-advisor for the Student Leadership Council. To find out what you can do, contact the Student Life Center at (602) 787-7240. And always remember -- the gift of time is among the greatest of all donations.

Student News

USA Funds Scholarship
Congratulations are due Samantha Schneider, who received a USA Funds’ 2008 scholarship. Excellent work!

Get involved
Student Life would like to remind everyone to get involved in one or more of the numerous campus activities PVCC has to offer.  JaMae Van Eeuwen, now starting her second year here, says at the beginning of her first semester, she suffered from the “car-to-class-to-car syndrome,” and had little social life. “Then, through the help of some of my classmates, I slowly became more involved in campus activities. I started to have more fun and my class work got a lot easier because I had friends to help me out.” We know that involved students have a higher chance of academic success.

So, with this in mind, please consider how you can help our students make learning connections through Student Life activities.   Feel free to drop by the Student Life Center in KSC building, or visit the Student Life Weblog at http://www.paradisevalley/edu/studentlife/blog

Projects Update

Blue Ribbon Panel Regulations
As you know, the Governing Board adopted several policies and regulations recommended by the Community Member Blue Ribbon Panel. All Maricopa employees are asked to sign acknowledgement forms relative to these policies.  As of Aug. 30, 2007, a number of PVCC faculty and staff have not signed the Blue Book Acknowledgement and Conflict of Interest Acknowledgements. These forms are available through RIO’s Sharepoint system. he URL for the website is:  https://doforms.riosalado.edu/

There, you will be prompted for your User Name and Password.   Your User Name is your Maricopa email address:  (e.g. -- Jane.Smith@xxmail.maricop.edu). Your password is your email account password.

SIS implementation hours
In support of a successful SIS start, certain Student Services offices in the KSC building will be closed on 3 to 5 p.m. on Fridays during the months of Sept., Oct., and Nov. for the implementation of our new Student Information System (SIS).   The offices are:  Fiscal, Admissions & Records, Academic Advising, and Financial Aid.  The Testing Center will close at 1 p.m. on Fridays during that same period.

Capital Development
Our new Life Sciences Building project is progressing extremely well.  Maricopa County Community College District Facilities, Planning and Development (FP&D) received the Schematic Design Phase Documents for our Life Sciences Building from project architect, Marlene Imirzian & Associates and the cost estimate prepared by Barton Malow, dated August 20, 2007.  On August 21, 2007, FP&D issued the authorization to proceed with the development of design development phase.  Dr. Mancini reports he is very pleased with the progress on the building which he says, “will be a center of student and staff activities with areas for meaningful engagement.”

Running Track resurfacing
At the Aug. 28, 2007, MCCCD Governing Board meeting, the Board approved a contract to PVCC for the resurfacing of our running track. The existing running track has worn through to the subsurface.  The track will be resurfaced, including re-striping, lane markers, as part of normal periodic maintenance provided for all running tracks.  The budget for this project will be funded from the 2004 General Obligation Bond, Athletic Facility funds.

Institutional Review Board
I want to remind you about the District’s new, official Administrative Regulation 3.08, adopted on June 19, 2007.  Details of our Institutional Review Board policy can be found in the MCCCD Online Policy Manual. As you know, MCCCD must comply with changing federal guidelines for human-subjects research, as MCCCD receives considerable funding for programs and projects through federal grant monies.  To this end, an MCCCD Institutional Review Board (IRB) administrative regulation will help the district identify, assess and manage any potential risks associated with conducting research with human subject participants. It will also ensure that subjects are treated ethically and that their rights and welfare are adequately protected. All research activities involving the use of human subjects must be reviewed and approved by the IRB before data collection can begin. Investigators may not solicit subject participation or begin data collection until they have received written approval from the IRB. This applies to internal and external MCCCD researchers--faculty, staff, and students.

Students seeking to conduct individual research will be able to submit applications to conduct research, with their faculty advisor as the principal investigator (PI) of record, and the student as co-PI.)
