President's Open Door
Interim President Paul Dale extends his “Open Door” invitation to drop by his office for informal discussions on Sept. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to noon; Oct. 9 from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; or Oct. 22 from 1 to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

iChat Links Black Mountain to PVCC Library
Black Mountain students now have face-to-face access to the PVCC Union Hills campus library through iChat, a video chat program that remotely connects students to librarians for reference and instructional services. Faculty Librarian Sheila Afnan-Manns says iChat offers Black Mountain students the same level of library assistance as being on the Union Hills campus—without the commute. Students can use the iChat program on any of the Macintosh computers at Black Mountain to talk to a librarian in real time. A screen-sharing function allows librarians to guide students to the exact online resources they need.

Stay Healthy and Prevent the Spread of Flu
On Oct. 23, PVCC offers employees flu shots from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in KSC 212. Sign ups will be announced next month. Jacalyn Askin, Vice President of Administrative Services, encourages staff and students to view the college’s emergency management Web site, www.paradisevalley.edu/mems/, for important emergency and health information. In addition to posting campus emergency alerts, the site provides advice for staying healthy and preventing the spread of H1N1. The MEMS-produced fliers, "Staying Healthy: Your part in preventing H1N1" and "Preparing for an Emergency," have been posted around campus and can be found online.

Film Festival at PVCC Continues
"Wedding in Galilee," a 1987 film directed by Michel Khleifi, shows at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 16, in the Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free. The film is the story of a Palestinian man living in the Occupied Zone who asks the local Israeli military chief for permission to have his son’s wedding and reception beyond the curfew. The chief agrees on the condition that he and his soldiers are invited, creating tension and family stress while teetering on potential violence. For more information contact the PVCC Box Office at 602-787-7738.

PVCC Faculty Jazz Quintet Celebrates the Greats of Jazz
In their ongoing series celebrating the greats of jazz, the PVCC Faculty Jazz Quintet is performing the music of The Modern Jazz Quartet at 7:30 p.m.,
Sept. 19, in the Center for the Performing Arts. The Modern Jazz Quartet originated a blending of classical chamber music with blues and be-bop stylings for what would become known as Third Stream. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and staff, $8 for students and $5 for children. Tickets can be purchased at the PVCC Box Office.

Early Childhood Ed Experts Lead Teacher Seminar
Teachers from around Phoenix will be on campus Saturday for an Early Childhood Education seminar led by nationally renowned authors and early childhood education advocates Margie Carter and Deb Curtis of Seattle. The seminar, “Becoming a Reflective Teacher,” begins at 8 a.m. in KSC 208.
The seminar explores:

       •    Designing the learning environment to reflect your core values and beliefs
       •    Focusing on children’s perspectives and learning styles
       •    Considering different perspectives as you make teaching decisions.

The cost is $75 and participants receive a certificate for 6.5 clock hours of professional development. For an additional $71, it also can be taken for one credit as ECH279 Early Childhood Curriculum Development. There is a $15.00 registration fee for individuals not already registered at PVCC.
For more information, contact Harriet Betts at 602-787-6562. Beatitudes Age Link Intergenerational Child Development Center, PVCC and the Valley of the Sun Association for the Education of Young Children are seminar sponsors.

Acosta Named ACCAC Player of the Week
The Arizona Community College Athletic Conference has named Puma women’s soccer captain Nicola Acosta the season’s first Player of the Week. Head Coach Casey Bingham says Acosta is a hardworking player who has stepped up as a leader this season.

In their opening game against Chandler-Gilbert, the women won 3-2, followed
by a 5-0 win at home over Cochise and a 7-1 victory over Pima Community College. Acosta, a sophomore forward, scored three goals against Cochise and assisted on a fourth to be named to the top the ACCAC standings. She scored a fourth goal in the team’s 2-1 loss against Pima.

Teammates Alyssa Flores and Caiti Curry also are ACCAC leaders with three goals and one assist each. The women take the field again 4:30 p.m., Saturday, at Mesa Community College. The Pumas were unranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association poll but ranked No. 13 in the National Soccer Coaches Poll.

Men's Soccer Prevails Over Gateway
Pumas Men’s Soccer experienced the first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Gateway Community College at home Monday. The young team “came out strong and hungry,” to score three goals in the first 15 minutes and controlled play throughout the game, according to Head Coach Steven Green. Although the team lost its first two games against Chandler-Gilbert and No. 1 ranked Yavapai, Green says he has positive players who practice hard and continue to improve. The men take on Mesa Community College at 7 p.m. Saturday in Mesa.
