Policy on After-Hours Use of Buildings
This is to inform all PVCC employees and students that the college will officially be closed from the hours of midnight to 5:00 a.m.  No employees, students or visitors will be allowed on campus during these hours, with the exception of College Safety Officers on duty and Maintenance and Operations personnel (custodians).  This policy will provide necessary security and minimize risks to individuals.  The college does recognize that on occasion there may be a need for an employee to be on campus during closed hours (midnight to 5:00 a.m.).  In those instances, the employee must contact his/her supervisor and if approved, the supervisor will contact College Safety to make arrangements.

Fiddler on the Roof opens 2007-2008 Performing Arts season
What an exciting time. From October 6 through October 21, Arizona Jewish Theatre Company and PVCC will celebrate dual 20th anniversary seasons with their joint musical production of Fiddler on the Roof. The music director is Dan Kurek, adjunct music faculty at PVCC (as well as a respected opera singer), and the backstage crew includes students from our college. Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights; and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $40-$60, with discounts available for children and seniors. The student rush price, available one-half hour to curtain at the PVCC box office, is $15. Tickets are available at 602-264-0402 or online at www.azjewishtheatre.org

PVCC presents world debut of Child of the Kosmos
What a wonderful marriage of science and art! PVCC is honored and excited to be debuting Child of the Kosmos: Richard Feynman and the Quest for Scientific Adventure, the new play by PVCC’s Alan Tongret, head of our theatre program. The play, a total PVCC production, is a cooperative venture between PVCC’s Division of Fine and Performing Arts and our Science Division. It is a dramatization of the life of Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman, the colorful Cal Tech physicist who helped build the A-Bomb, and who years later served on the commission that investigated the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. Directed by PVCC’s Gary Zaro, the original music and sound effects are by Christopher Scinto; the scene and lighting design by Erik Reid, our resident theatre tech coordinator; and the science advisors are Dr. Casey Durnadet and Dr. Ed Rosenthal. Performances take place 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8-10; 2 p.m. Nov. 11; 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14-17; and 2 p.m. Nov. 18. Tickets are $8 to $12. New library database available
The PVCC Library recently acquired 360 Search, a federated search service which provides patrons with a simple and intuitive starting point for research. It is capable of searching our library’s entire e-resource collection at once, including the local catalog and even Google. The PVCC Library plans to introduce this new resource to all of our students doing research this fall. Anyone wanting more information or help on how to use this resource can call John Chavez, Electronic Resources Librarian, at 7-7222.

Professional Career Pathways Project
The Professional Career Pathways Project (PCPP) has funded 92 students with $20,000 towards their tuition.  Christie Colunga, of the Early Childhood Education Program, and Harriet Betts, of the Teacher Development Center, have told us that students also received almost $3,000 assistance towards their textbooks. This program is supported by federal funds, administered through the Arizona Department of Economic Security, set aside to improve early childhood programs. Students must already be employed in the field and working towards a degree or certificate in Early Childhood Education to qualify. Through this project, special classes are being held at Lincoln Learning Center and Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center. This is great news at a time students need it most!

Hole in one
Helice Agria in Athletics reports that their 3rd Annual Puma Classic golf tournament/fundraiser at Rancho Mañana Golf Club on September 8 was a smash success, earning over $7,000 for athletics scholarships and support.  All 92 participant spaces were sold out. Earnings go to the PVCC Student-Athlete Scholarship and Support Fund.

Faculty & Staff News

Creative Pathways
Our congratulations go out to Kent Shadburne, who will be working with the psychology faculty in the Behavioral Science Department under the supervision of Dr. Mike Todd, for a Creative Pathways internship. This placement is designed to provide Kent with increased knowledge of teaching methodologies in the field of psychology.

PVCC poet covers the globe
Full-time English faculty and poet Lois Roma-Deeley recently had one of her poems, Soliloquy of the Shooting Star, incorporated into Chicago’s “Cool Globes” project, a city-wide instillation of more than 100 globes incorporating ecological and Native American themes. Lois’s and artist Beth Shadur’s globe was titled For the Seventh Generation, and was situated right outside the famed Field Museum on Chicago’s lakefront campus.

Art on television
PVCC adjunct yoga faculty Tanya Fischer is also a full time artist and partner in Fischer/Warnica Fine Art. One of the firm’s pieces recently appeared in a new Showtime TV series with David Duchovny. Their art has also showed up in the film CRASH, and on the TV shows Desperate Housewives, Reba, and Judging Amy.

Student News

Shooting stars
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has just named Sam Smith and Jessie Walworth of PVCC’s Women's Soccer Team as Division I National Players of the Week Selections for September 12, 2007.  Congratulations to these players, the team, and their coaches.

Projects Update

Express College
It’s almost here! Soon it will be possible for PVCC students to finish college in half the time, finishing a class in seven weeks instead of 16. Each class meets for three hours and 20 minutes, and in each seven-week block, one class meets every Monday and Wednesday, the second class every Tuesday and Thursday. Yes, that’s a rugged schedule, but with motivation and the proper study skills, it can be done. Financial Aid will still be available to qualified students, and the course content is exactly the same as in the 16- week format. Our thanks go out to Dr. Shirley Green who is facilitating this express approach to the class schedule.

Cordially,

Mary Kay
President
