Career fairs
A huge thank you to Norma Chandler, Coordinator, Career Services, for
bringing all the wonderful employer representatives to campus this
Wednesday. More than 50 organizations were represented. In addition,
she coordinated a series of resume writing and interviewing skills
workshops for job seekers over a four-day period. We received
additional exposure when Jobing.com came out and taped video
interviews with our students looking for employment. Our Career Fair is
an outstanding public service not only for our students, but for our
area community as well. It frames PVCC as the place to go for
career training and development.
Separately, Mary Lou Mosley coordinated PVCC’s participation in the
Maricopa-wide Sky’s the Limit CTE Career Expo on Oct. 6 at
Cardinals Stadium. She reports that the attendance was exceptionally
high, with middle school and high school students arriving by the
busloads. All Maricopa Community Colleges were represented at this
Career Expo
President’s
Circle
Our newly reconstituted external campus advisory group met for the
first time this academic year on Monday, Oct. 8. We are pleased to
welcome five new members to the council. The work of this group
specifically addresses PVCC’s Strategic Issue # 6: How
can PVCC support institutional advancement and deepen its connections
with our community? Included on the President’s Circle are local
business leaders, superintendents from area school districts, and key
community opinion leaders. Already, they have provided ideas for
college progress and development.
National
Tutor Appreciation Week
Our own PVCC Learning Support Center (LSC) celebrated Tutor
Appreciation Week Oct. 8-13 by throwing an impromptu party, and the
students filled out Thank You cards for their favorite tutors. The LSC
has more than 50 tutors offering help in every subject area the college
teaches. Typical is calculus tutor Michael Bouey, 25, a returning
student who will be transferring to ASU in the spring with a double
major in Math and Engineering. “I love the environment at the Learning
Support Center,” Bouey says. “It’s so friendly, being here doesn’t feel
like work. And you learn a lot yourself. For instance, I’ve learned
that everyone has a different ‘learning language,’ which simply means
that some learn students best by explanation, while others learn best
visually. It’s amazing to see their eyes light up when they realize
that, yes, they can understand just about any subject when it’s taught
to them in their own individual way.”
I want to sincerely thank all the tutors in LSC who bring learning and
understanding to our students. Often, they make all the difference in a
student’s comprehension of a subject. Tutoring is one of the strong
pillars in our Student Success formula.

A real shot in the arm—it’s that time again
Flu shots are scheduled on Friday, Oct.
26 on our campus. They will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the
Fitness Center, room F131. This is covered under MCCCD health
insurance. However, you will have to sign up in advance, so watch for
an email in you “Inbox” from our Wellness Coordinator coming in about a

Professional
growth opportunity
Coming up in November our E&OL office has scheduled a workshop on
our campus that promises to be both useful and informative. Navigate
Maricopa Series - Risk Management Tools for Supervisors, will be
held 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in KSC208; course no. 000649,
section no. 0004. You may register online for theses sessions at:
http://www.maricopa.edu/learn/
This hands-on course is intended to build on the concept of integrated
risk assessment and will explore several qualitative assessment tools
to identify the best course of action in managing risks. Participants
will evaluate moderately complex case scenarios and, using the tools to
assess the situation, determine appropriate direction.
Smoke
Alarm Volunteer Walk: volunteers needed
The PVCC-PC Fire Operations Academy and Internship classes will be
participating in a smoke detector walk on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event
is sponsored by the City of Phoenix Mayor's Office, the City of Phoenix
Neighborhood Services, and the City of Phoenix Fire Department. More
than 50 students and two instructors from the Fire Operations Academy
will participate with other volunteers. This is the class Community
Service/Involvement project for the fall 2007 semester, and it marks
our Fire Sciences Program’s second year of participation in this event.
Rebecca McConnell of the Phoenix Fire Department commented, “Your class
really makes a huge impact and is greatly appreciated out there. Thanks
again for your support.”
When: Saturday, Oct. 20th. Sign in time
for volunteers is 8 a.m.. The walk itself takes
place from 9 a.m. to noon.
Route: The Green Gables area, southwest
of the Canal, McDowell St. to Virginia Ave., 20th Place to 25th Place.
Assembly location: Food City grocery
store on the northwest corner of McDowell and 20th Place (right at the
A51 onramp), 2124 E. McDowell Road.

Department at 602-261-8675 or our own Paul Sunder at 787-6736 if you
are interested in volunteering. Additional volunteers (16 years of age
or older) are needed, especially those with bilingual skills.
Women’s
Leadership Group
I would like to thank those who participated n in the Women's
Leadership Group last year, and to take this opportunity to invite
participation from faculty and staff this coming year. You may recall
that membership dues are $10 annually with $4 going towards the
District/WLG support, $4 going towards the PVCC/WLG support, and $2
going towards the Gina Kranitz Scholarship Fund. Send your membership
renewal to Terry Adriance in the Counseling Office. For more
information, call Terry at
787-6541. Please join me in supporting this group at PVCC.

Just the Guys: Keepin’ it Real
Dr. Shaun R. Harper, Assistant Professor of Higher Education Management
at the University of Pennsylvania, will lead a student discussion about
the future of minority males in higher education. The talk will focus
on the college experiences of minority males across the district. To
become part of the discussion, be there 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov.1, at
Rio Salado Conference Center, 2323 W. 14th Street, Tempe. RSVPs are
requested at www.maricopa.edu/studentaffairs/conference07/rsvpnov1.php
Since this is an important, timely topic, we are hoping for a high
attendance.
The following day, Friday, Nov. 2, Dr. Harper will be the keynote
speaker at the MCCCD Student Success Conference, which will be held at
the Desert Willow Conference Center, 4340 E. Cotton Center Blvd.,
Phoenix. For complete information, contact Ann Moss at (480) 731-8023.
Women’s
soccer shuts out Glendale and Phoenix
The number eight NJCAA ranked PVCC Women’s Soccer team shut out
Glendale 3-0 Wednesday, with Sam Smith scoring her 11th goal of the
year. Smith also tied the school assist record. This win comes on the
heels of Monday’s 3-0 shut out of Phoenix College. Freshman Simone
Marshall knocked in first goal, with Chloe Hansen and Marissa Dobbs
following her lead. Congratulations on those back-to-back shut outs!
Men’s
soccer sweeps Phoenix and Scottsdale
The Men’s Soccer Team also defeated Phoenix College Monday, finishing
with a 4-2 win. Standouts in the game were Austin Dowd, who scored two
goals; Roberto DeLima, who scored another; and Cesar Mexia, who scored
his 25th goal of the year. The team also cinched a 3-0 win over
Scottsdale Community College last Saturday, so it looks like they are
back to their winning ways. Great going!
Cross-Country
men take fourth at Border Wars
Battling the same temperatures that shut down the Chicago Marathon last
Saturday, the PVCC Men’s Cross Country team finished fourth in a field
of 26 other teams at the Border Wars Cross Country Championship in
Edwardsville, Illinois. Freshman Jeremy Sudbury led the way for the
Pumas, finishing 14th with a time of 26:50.15. “It was very hot and
humid, but the guys ran very well,” said Coach Barney. We applaud this
team for their display of true grit.
Former
Puma notches big win
Former Puma standout goalkeeper Adam Aguilar started in his first game
for Grand Canyon University on Sunday. GCU won 2-1 in overtime against
Cal State LA, which is ranked fourth in the Far West Region for
Division II. “We can’t forget what Adam did,” said GCU Coach Petar
Draksin. “He saved the day.”
Mexia
and Soto gain titles
Cesar Mexia and Erick Soto helped the Pumas go undefeated this past
week, to earn ACCAC Player and Keeper of the Week honors, respectively.
This is the second time that freshman Cesar Mexia has earned these
honors. Congratulations to both fine players.

Projects Update

PVCC North at Black
Mountain
A few weeks ago, Paul Dale and I met with Jim Reed, chair of the Desert
Foothills YMCA and Community Center. Plans are still in place for a
late March or early April 2008 groundbreaking, where PVCC will have six
classrooms, an administrative office area, and a common area. Right
now, the college expects to be in the new building in January 2009.
Fire
alarm project
The fire alarm replacement project has begun at the campus. Our current
campus-wide fire alarm system is outdated. It is the original 1980's
equipment dating from when the college was originally constructed, 20
years ago. Johnson Controls will be handling the installation. Their
personnel will be on-site in October, but most of the work is limited
to design investigation and layout review. Completion of the project is
planned for March, 2008. At no time during the project will occupied
classrooms and offices be disrupted. The majority of work is to be
performed during Thanksgiving and the Holiday break. Thank you for your
cooperation during the project.
Netting
project
The security netting project between the golf course and the college is
currently with the Maricopa County Flood Control District for further
structural review. It is slated to begin in spring semester. We will
use the services of the Chandler-Gilbert students in their electrical
utilities technology program in erecting the poles and netting, thus
conserving the District resources. Kudos to Mark Weaver at CGCC and
David Matus at PVCC.
Down
the primrose path
Our Facilities Services Department is busy reviewing plans for a
connector path between F-Building and the new Q-Building (former County
Library). Civil engineering plans and fee proposals are being evaluated.
