United Way Campaign
--- Help PVCC “Bring in the Dough”
I am pleased to announce that the 2007 PVCC United Way Campaign, as
part of the greater MCCCD Campaign, is now in full swing. Last year’s
campus campaign was a terrific success, with over $20,000 raised and 96
pledge participants, contributing to the MCCCD record-setting campaign
total of $320,522. The PVCC Campaign Committee has set this year’s
goal at $22,000, and under the leadership of District Campaign
Co-Chairs Dr. Steve Helfgot and Dr. Ken Atwater, the MCCCD total goal
has been set at an ambitious $340,000.
As always, the PVCC United Way Committee has put together a wonderful
campaign that offers the campus community several ways to engage,
participate and give. Each of you should have received a personal
visit from your Policy Group leader with your United Way pledge form –
and a special cookie treat (compliments of Aramark) to remind you to
“help us bring in the dough.” This year’s campaign features include:
• The annual “Policy Group Challenge” for pledge participation (a
great rivalry!)
• The online silent auction through December 7
• The highly popular annual Murder Mystery Party presented by
Student Life tonight (hurry, tickets may still be available)
• “Dough”nation cash collection boxes at the Paradise Café and the
PVCC Bookstore
• A new “Diversity Luncheon” featuring cuisine from around the
world, slated for Wednesday, November 14 in the KSC lower hallway (save
the date -- more details to come)
• And the new “United Way Basket Raffle” in which all campus
Divisions, Departments and Policy Groups are invited to put together a
themed basket to be raffled at the end of year All-Campus Holiday
Luncheon on December 14. (Which unit will have the best basket? Could
this spark even more friendly competition across campus? All in good
fun, and for a good cause, of course.)
Questions regarding the PVCC United Way Campaign can be directed to Sue
Isackson or Julia Devous, Campaign Co-Chairs, located in the
Institutional Advancement office (KSC 220) or to your Policy Group
leader. And, in keeping with the “dough” theme, when you return your
completed Pledge form, you will receive a voucher for yet another
fabulous Aramark cookie, as a special thank you from the committee.
I would like to personally encourage each of you to join us in the
effort to make our community a better place to live by making a
contribution to the United Way. Have fun with this year’s campaign. I
invite your participation in helping PVCC “bring in the dough!” in 2007.
Honors
Forum lecture
On October 17, PVCC was the host college for the Honors Forum lecture
held at Phoenix College. I had the honor of introducing the evening’s
presenter, author Farooka Gauhari, whose book, “Searching for Saleem:
An Afghan Woman’s Odyssey,” revealed the difficulties she suffered
after her country was taken over first, by the invading Soviets, and
then, the fundamentalist Taliban. The book details her search for her
missing husband while her country crumbled under two different regimes,
and her eventual decision to move her family to the U.S. She is now a
member of the biology department at the University of Nebraska. Hosting
such an evening, where such a brave, resilient woman told her
heart-felt story, was an experience I shall not soon forget. I
encourage you and your students to take advantage of future Honors
Forum lectures. A special thanks goes out to Sherry Adams and Rick
Vaughn, Honors coordinators, for their support of this forum.
The next Honors Forum presentation on Nov. 14 will feature
award-winning reporter and author Jeffrey Birnbaum. A regular guest on
Washington Week, Mr. Birnbaum has published books covering his
experiences with the Clinton and Bush administrations.
In addition to his evening event at Phoenix College’s Bulpitt
Auditorium, Mr. Birnbaum will to on PVCC’s campus from approximately
9:00 a.m.-11:15 a.m. He will be speaking to students in the south-east
corner of the library at PVCC.
Breakfast will be served, and reservations are requested. Please let
Jackie Battistone know, at 787-7245, if you or your students plan to
come.
For more information on future Honors Forum presentations, visit their
Web site at:

Phi
Theta Kappa Honors Society induction
Tuesday, Oct. 16, at a very impressive ceremony, Phi Theta Kappa
inducted 37 students into the Honors Society. It was an evening that
both inspired and touched everyone present. PVCC musicians provided a
lovely musical background via guitar and violin as families of the
inductees looked on with pride. In a wonderful talk, Heather Kruse
spoke from her heart, telling those assembled how important it is to
become involved, and how involvement in such worthy organizations and
causes can change lives. We are justly proud of these outstanding
students, and we also want to show our appreciation for the robust
support of Phi Theta Kappa officers -- Scott Mason, president; Brenda
Kisrow, vice president of leadership; Laurie Bachand, recording
officer; Cynthia Fuqua, vice president of service; Rebecca Martros,
vice president of scholarship; JaMae’ Van Eeuwen, vice president of
fellowship; Marina Haley, treasurer; and Steve Nicoloff and Paula
Vaughn, co-advisors. Again, thank you all for your efforts, and
congratulations to the new Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society members.
Fire
Science scholarship
Captain Paul Sunder, PVCC Fire Science Program Director, recently gave
us the good news that The Bomberos, an organization of Valley
firefighters, will be awarding a scholarship to a qualified PVCC Fire
Science student. Although the scholarship is in the process of being
formalized, we can tell you that the award will likely be for the
spring ’08 semester. We will let you know as we receive more
information on this new partnership.

PVCC
Business Club’s “Putting to Prague” golf classic

Golf Classic,” Saturday, October 27, at the Starfire Golf Course, 11500
N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale. Shotgun start, 9 a.m. Tickets, $100;
proceeds will be used to offset the cost of an 102/BPCC133AA field
study to Prague in May, 2008. For further information, contact Dina
Preston-Ortiz at 602-787-6729.
Native
American Recognition Week
Mark your calendars. PVCC will celebrate Native American Recognition
Week with several special events. From 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Tuesday, November 6, Freddie Johnson will present a lecture on Dine’
(Navajo) culture, in the Student Union. On Wednesday, the contemporary
Native American film, “Smoke Signals,” will screen from 11 a.m. to 1
p.m., also in the Student Union. To finish the week off, from 10 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Thursday, there will be a Fry Bread Sale outside near the
Blue Statues; hoop dancer Bartley Harris and traditional dancer Dallin
Maybee will provide the entertainment.
Governing
Board Presentation
I am pleased to report that on Tuesday, October 23, our college
provided an update on the iStartSmart pilot project to the MCCCD
Governing Board and Chancellor’s Executive Council at the regular
Governing Board meeting. Vice Presidents Bendotti and Dale made a
presentation that shared some exciting preliminary results, with
evidence of how this new and innovative program has positively impacted
the success of new students at PVCC. In addition to the presentation,
the Governing Board and CEC members were provided with copies of an
Executive Summary and the iStartSmart brochure. The presentation was
well received and continues to generate much interest. We were asked
to return to the Governing Board with another progress and evaluation
update in the spring. Thank you to all of the faculty and staff who
continue to devote so much thought, time and energy into developing and
refining this important program and related courses for the college and
the District.

Men’s soccer finishes season
Last Saturday, the Pumas defeated the Pima Aztecs 2-0 Saturday, which
was a particular triumph since the Aztecs were ranked 15th in the
country. The win avenged a 3-2 overtime loss to Pima earlier in the
season, making the win doubly sweet. Then on Monday, the Pumas trounced
Phoenix College 3-0 in the first round of the NJCAA Region I playoffs,
which moved them to the Semi-Finals at Yavapai College on Wednesday.
Although defender Cory Norris’s injury during Monday’s game dealt a
great blow to the team when he had to miss Wednesday’s game, the Pumas
fought valiantly, but lost 7-1. Still, this was a successful season for
the PVCC team, which had recorded three straight shutouts up. “We had a
great year and I’m proud of all my players and what we accomplished
this season,” said Coach Tim Marchisotto. “We will look to build on
this and be even better next year.”
The 2007 season gained the Pumas numerous accolades. On Sunday,
freshman Cesar Mexia was selected to the First Team All-ACCAC and the
NJCAA All-Region I team. For the 2007 season, he led the ACCAC goals
(23) and overall scoring (52 points). In addition, Mexia finished
second in the nation in goals (26), and fifth overall in total points,
with 59 breaking from the PV single scoring record in the process. He
recorded three four-goal games on the year, and had a total of six
multi-goal games. Kudos to this gifted freshman for his amazing feat!
Defender and first-year transfer Cory Norris was selected to the Second
Team All-ACCAC. Norris, a Puma captain, was a critical component to the
PV defense, and led the Pumas to four shutouts for the year.
Sophomore Eris Lespron and Roberto DeLima were both selected to the
All-ACCAC Team Honorable Mention. Join with me in congratulating these
terrific players for their hard-played victories!
Women’s
soccer honorees
Let’s hear it for sophomore captain Sam Smith, who earned First Team
All-ACCAC and NJCAA All-Region I honors on Sunday. Smith also earned
the same honors last year, and was one of this year’s top vote-getters,
coming in second for the 2007 Player of the Year Selections. She
recorded 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 pints this season, and her 10
assists set a single season PV record.
Sophomore defender and captain Jessica Schartz was selected to the
Second Team All-ACCAC, as were freshman forward Simone Marshall and
freshman goalkeeper Jessie Walworth. We celebrate their accomplishments.
