Veteran’s Day events
We at PVCC would like to take this opportunity to salute all those who
are serving and have served our country so well. On Veteran’s Day,
November 11, 1007, the words, “home of the free and land of the brave,”
have never had greater meaning. We would like to thank the Veteran
Services Office for the service, counsel, friendship and respect they
provide veterans and service members, not only on Veteran’s Day, but
every day of the year.
To further observe Veteran’s Day, take part in the Veteran’s 5K Run
& 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk Sunday, November 11, at Reach 11 Recreation
Area/Horseman’s Park, on Tatum Road, south of the 101. Registration
begins at 7 a.m.; the 5K at 8 a.m., the 1-mile at 8:10 a.m. Proceeds
will benefit the Arizona Veterans Program Association (AVPA)
Scholarship Fun. Online registration is available at
www.arizonarunningeventsco.com
Senator Dennis DeConcini visits PVCC
Mark your calendars: Former U. S. Senator Dennis DeConcini will be here
1 to 2:15 p.m. Monday, November 26, in KSC 208, for an open forum and
book signing of his Senator DeConcini: From the Center of the Aisle.
During his time in office, this Arizona icon proved an independent
political thinker by sponsoring legislation to limit the sale of
assault weapons, and supporting Clarence Thomas’s nomination to the
Supreme Court. Make sure you don’t miss the chance to chat with one of
the nation’s most outspoken lawmakers. We thank faculty member Jim
Patterson for helping to arrange this event with Senator DeConcini.
Recycling
project
Honors students Sara Fassil, Jake Bartell, Austin Goudzward, Shea
Rembold, Geoff Cox, Stephanie Wilson, and Ashley Arnold have created
and distributed bins as part of a recycling program they have
instituted on campus for their honors service project. Thus far, they
have made six bins out of recycled boxes, sought and received
permission from David Matus, Director of Facilities Services, to place
the bins around campus. Each student will check these bins one time a
week and sort through the items for recycling. Many thanks to these
students for their hard work.
CPA’s performance lineup
PVCC’s beautiful Center for the Performing Arts will play host to
numerous events in November and December: please put these events in
your calendar.
• PVCC faculty creativity will
be showcased in Fall Dance Collection, which includes
choreography by dance faculty Sonia Valle, Erin Nielson, Bonita Lovett,
and Helena Vlahos. The dance concert also features choreographed pieces
by guest artist Shouze Ma, associate professor in ASU’s Department of
Dance. And don’t miss Flux Dance Project’s premier performance of In
the White of the Eye; and the Capoeira Group’s AXE Capoeira,
a blend of dance, acrobatics, and martial arts. This promises to be a
wonderful evening of dance. The performances take place 7:30 p.m.
November 30 and December 3 at PVCC’s Center for Performing Arts. $12
adults, $8 students and seniors.
• The PVCC student Jazz Combo, the PVCC Big Band, and the PUMA Jazz
Ensemble will perform 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, in the CPA.
Admission is free.
• The North Valley Chamber Orchestra, the PVCC Community Chorus,
Percussion Ensemble, Piano Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble,
and various student soloists will perform a holiday concert 7:30 p.m.
Thursday, December 6, in the CPA. Admission is free.
• The No-Frills Revue takes place 7:30 p.m. Saturday,
December 8; and 2 p.m. Sunday, December 9, at CPA. This musical satire
has fun with grocery shopping, ginsu knives, catastrophic high school
reunions, rock concert benefits for obscure causes, and provides a
hilarious sneak peek at the “first drafts” of famous musicals.
Presented by the Music Theatre Workshop. Admission: $12, $8 staff,
students and seniors.
Traffic
accident follow-up
In the wake of the tragic accident three weeks ago at 34th St. and
Union Hills, we wanted to let you know that we requested a meeting with
the City of Phoenix Traffic Engineering Dept. On Tuesday of this week,
Vice President Kurt Conover, Scott Meek, Paul Keller, and Rod Fensom
met with interim Phoenix Traffic Engineer Ronald Doubek. The City
agreed to make a number of immediate changes at that intersection and
to conduct a traffic study to determine what further steps can be
taken. A follow-up meeting with Mr. Doubek is scheduled for Dec. 18.
As always, our primary concern is the safety of students, employees,
vendors, and visitors who enter and exit campus at that spot every day.
Career panel
On Thursday, November 8, a career panel was held in KSC 208, which
featured speakers from various professions. Included were John-Paul
Hutchins, a television chef; David Vowels, a prosthetic designer; Moira
Lynn, a nurse practitioner and psychotherapist; and Nick Smith, a
former NFL player who is now a successful entrepreneur. Out thanks go
out to all involved for providing such a stimulating and informative
discussion.

Traveling faculty
James Patterson will be addressing the CIT/League for Innovation, in
Nashville, November 11. His presentation is titled “Free and
Inexpensive Tools to Use for Online Development.” He will also
demonstrate how to construct a simple web presence using NVU, a
complete web-authoring system; and the use of a webcam with Logitech
and Yahoo! to communicate in real-time with students.
Crossing
32nd Street
As part of the Teatro Caliente Experimental Performance Festival, the
PVCC music ensemble Crossing 32nd Street will perform 7 p.m. November
16, 2007, at PHiX Gallery, 1113 NW Grand Ave., Phoenix. The ensemble is

PVCC
paramedics ace their test
Dan Donahue reports that the PVCC Paramedic class of 2007 achieved a
100% pass rate this last weekend, during their National Registry Skills
Testing. Next up is their NRT written exam for state and national
certification. We hope they continue their success. Congratulations to
this exceptional class.
Student sings PVCC’s
praises
Jennifer May (formerly Mueller), one of Mike Ho’s former students, sent
him an email detailing what’s now happening in her life. After leaving
PVCC in summer 2005, she enrolled as an honor student at Piedmont
Virginia Community College, and eventually transferred to the
University of Virginia with a 4.0 GPA. The very first semester she made
the Dean’s list! She was accepted to live at the International
Residential College, a dormitory for students from all over the world.
While there, she has organized several events for the International
Rescue Center, which works with refugees. “I truly feel that the skills
that I learned at PVCC helped to better prepare me for what I face
now,” Jennifer writes. “I have declared my major in Foreign Affairs and
French, with an area of concentration in Africa, and hope to being
learning Arabic soon, as well. Next summer I will travel to Lyon,
France, to study French. I also hope to take a course offered at the
United Nations through the college summer program. I hope to travel to
West Africa with the Peace Corps upon earning my undergraduate degree.”
Jennifer’s testimonial is more proof that PVCC truly is a gateway to a
lifetime of learning anywhere in the world.

Strategic Planning
The Strategic Planning Committee is busy working on the many tasks
necessary to develop a new PVCC Strategic Plan for 2008-2012. The
committee was expanded over the summer, and now has 34 members
representing the various employee groups, key functional areas, all
division chairs, vice presidents and deans.
Recently, small groups of the team members reviewed different
environmental scan areas including economy/workforce, external
stakeholders, internal stakeholders, social/political/legislation,
education, service area data, and related PVCC studies that have been
done recently. The groups reported on important information that may
impact PVCC at the September and October meetings. Links to the
presentations are available at
http://www.pvc.maricopa.edu/ie/planning.html.
In the coming months, committee members will be discussing where PVCC
wants to be in the next 5 years and will start to write the new
Strategic Plan. Co-chairs Jeff Lace and Laurie Pemberton will
facilitate a session at the December 3rd meeting of the President’s
Circle to gather community input about the challenges and opportunities
this area of the Greater Phoenix Valley expects to face and PVCC’s role.
