40th ANNIVERSARY OF TITLE IX

June 23, 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX. This originally unassuming federal law has made it possible over the past 40 years for women to pursue their dreams not only in athletics but also in education. Although the original statute made no explicit mention of sports, the now monumental legislation has empowered women to participate in all levels of sports and in turn, quite often, endowed them with a solid education.

Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a short and simple federal law: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Since 1995, PVCC Athletics has enabled women to compete at the collegiate level as well as earn their college degrees. The Pumas have achieved success in six women’s sports. Without Title IX, much of that success would not have been possible.

As chronicled in the history below, the PV women's intercollegiate teams have been extremely successful in achieving national recognition in both academics and athletics.
