It has not been determined but looks like many sophomore players will be pursuing soccer at the next level at a 4 year university. "We responded to adversity this season and show we can play with the best of them, we are looking forward to next year's season and feel as a staff that we could not have finished the season with a better effort," said Head Coach Boris Teoharevic. The sophomore players who are moving on are: Jon Simic, Manny Cabral, Andrew Bravo, David Barragan, Jaden Smith, Gabriel Montoya, Jorge "Puma" Gallardo, Dejan Susak, Jorge Yax-Lopez, and Emmanuel Conde. The Pumas will have a hard time replacing the aforementioned student-athletes and they will missed. Overall the Pumas finished with a record of 9-11-1 which is an improvement from last year's record. Keeper, Mo Aguirre recorded 9 saves in the game including a brilliant save from a penalty kick. The Pumas fell with an overtime penalty kick score of 4-3, which was a heart-breaking way to lose a match after fighting for 110 minutes. "I could not have been prouder of these guys, they deserved the win today and left it all on the field, which is all you can ask for, " said Assistant Coach Jonathan Sang. The game finished with PVCC having 8 shots on goal to CGCC's 15. The overall performance showed that the PVCC Men's soccer program is on the rise and will continue to develop. Congratulations Andy! 40th ANNIVERSARY OF TITLE IX June 23, 2012 marks the 40th anniversary of Title IX. This originally unassuming federal law has made it possible over the past 40 years for women to pursue their dreams not only in athletics but also in education. Although the original statute made no explicit mention of sports, the now monumental legislation has empowered women to participate in all levels of sports and in turn, quite often, endowed them with a solid education. Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 is a short and simple federal law: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." Since 1995, PVCC Athletics has enabled women to compete at the collegiate level as well as earn their college degrees. The Pumas have achieved success in six womens sports. Without Title IX, much of that success would not have been possible. As chronicled in the history below, the PV women's intercollegiate teams have been extremely successful in achieving national recognition in both academics and athletics. 2011-2012 NJCAA Academic All-American Ashley Peter, Soccer NJCAA Academic All-American Taylor Als, Cross Country/Track & Field/Tennis NJCAA Academic All-American Megan Steffensmeier, Softball NJCAA Academic All-American Ashley Workman, Cross Country/Track & Field NJCAA Academic All-American Wyndham Gardner, Cross Country NJCAA All-Academic Team Cross Country (3.45 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Golf (3.23 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Soccer (3.18 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Indoor Track & Field (3.10 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Indoor Track & Field (3.06 GPA) NJCAA All-American, 1st Team Jordan Davidson Soccer 2010-2011 NJCAA Academic All-American Jessica Ernst (Distinguished), Track & Field NJCAA Academic All-American Ashlee Hayes, Soccer NJCAA All-Academic Team Cross Country (3.49 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Tennis (3.42 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Indoor Track & Field NJCAA Team of the Year (3.28 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Outdoor Track & Field (3.28 GPA) NJCAA All-Academic Team Soccer (3.17 GPA) NJCAA National Champions Soccer NJCAA All-American, 1st Team Alyssa Oelschlager Soccer NJCAA All-American, Honorable Mention - With wind gusts topping out at over 40 miles per hour, the Pumas shot a season high team score of 313, ten shots back of the leaders. The first round did have a few bright spots with Brent Baylons eagle on the par 5 #2 and Dillon Callows eagle on the par five #5. Birdies were hard to come by and pars were really good scores. This reminded head coach, Erik Kotheimer, of watching the professionals grind to make pars in The U.S. Open. The second day of play began with The Pumas in 7th place and in need of a rally. The winds calmed down for Tuesdays round, which left Mount Graham Golf Course vulnerable to birdies and better. The highly motivated team took full advantage of the conditions and took off quickly out of the gate with Brent Baylon and Jake Byrum making birdie on #1. The second hole was even better for the team with a birdie by Dillon Callow and eagles by Brent Baylon and Kenny McGinley. By hole #7, Brent Baylon was 5-under par and the rest of the team was no worse than even par. The winds did pick up on the back nine and the team lost ground to par. The second round concluded with a team score of 294 led by Brent Baylons 2-under par 70, 74s by the steady play of Alex Vetnar and Kenny McGinley, 76s from freshmen Jake Byrum and Eric Diment, and a 78 from Dillon Callow. When asked about the teams performance, Coach Erik Kotheimer said, I am extremely proud of this group of guys. This bunch has grown leaps and bounds throughout the season and we are just beginning to see how good we can be. With a two day total of 607, Paradise Valley Community College jumped from 7th place to end in 3rd place, one stroke ahead of Mesa Community College.
