The following assessments and/or classes are available to help you make informed decisions about your future career. Schedule an appointment to meet with a PVCC Career Counselor to begin your career assessments. After you complete the assessments, the PVCC Career Counselor will help you interpret your results and recommend a research and action plan.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI)
Knowing your personality type, as measured through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument, can help you with career planning at every stage: from your choices of subjects and majors in school to choosing your first career, to advancing in your organization or changing careers later in life. People often find difficulty defining what kind of work they want to do or why a given field makes them comfortable or uncomfortable. Personality type is a practical tool for investigating what works for you, then looking for and recognizing work that satisfies your preferences.
Cost: $20 MBTI for PVCC enrolled students, $25 for non-students
Strong Interest Inventory® (SII)
Use SII for Career Change, Identify College Major, or to find a Vocation.
The SII is based on the idea that individuals are more satisfied and productive when they work in jobs or at tasks that they find interesting and when they work with people whose interests are similar to their own. The SII takes about 30 minutes to complete and contains 291 items that measure your interests in a wide range of occupations, occupational activities, hobbies, leisure activities and types of people. The newly revised assessment includes jobs in the fast-growing of computer hardware and electronics, marketing and advertising, finance and accounting along with traditional jobs. Your interests are compared to thousands of individuals who report being happy and successful in their jobs. Your personalized report identifies your optimum career choices based on your interests and includes additional related occupations with concise job descriptions.

Cost: $15 for enrolled PVCC students, $20 for non-students
StrengthsQuest, Gallup's strengths development program for college-age students, gives students the opportunity to develop based on their strengths rather than their weaknesses. In other words, it helps students learn what they do best, then build their lives on those talents.
With StrengthsQuest™, students can:
- discover and develop their greatest talents
- use their strengths to improve their grades and increase their learning
- strategically determine a rewarding career path
- focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses
Cost: $15 for enrolled PVCC students, $20 for non-students
Consider one of the following classes for a more structured assessment of your personal and educational planning.
CPD102AB - Career Exploration Class, 2 credits
Designed to assist students making career choices. Focuses on self-assessment in terms of educational and career opportunities and reasonable possibilities in the world of work. Includes assessment for personal/career interests, values, needs, attitudes, skills, and other potential, and exploration of occupational information to establish career and educational goals. Prerequisites: None. Additional course fee $20.
- Explain the process of career and life planning
- Integrate the results of self assessments and inventories to identify career options
- Analyze current and future workplace trends and occupation/educational outlook
- Use research tools to investigate careers
- Develop a personal evaluation criteria based on self assessment and career research data
- Design an action plan that includes educational and career goals
Course Fee: Students enrolled in CPD102AB, 2 credits will pay a $20 course fee to take both
the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and Strong Interest Inventory (SII) assessments.
Focus on increasing student success through college orientation and personal growth, study skills development, and educational and career planning. Prerequisites: None. Additional course fee $20
