iGoal
iGoal@PVCC is an overarching program designed to help students plan their success as a leaner and student. This program incorporates eight student learning and success outcomes that assist students in getting the most out of their college education. iGoal@PVCC was widely used during New Student Orientation, in classes, and by various departments across PVCC. Over 1,800 unique goals have been set by 1,500 students. Teaching students to use and value goal-setting, by employing the iGoal tool, aligns with the college’s strategic emphases in the areas of increasing student persistence (#5), becoming more learner centered (#1), and providing better service to under-prepared students, (#4).
Under-prepared Student Initiative Committee
This committee designed and now is in the second semester of an implementation phase of iStartSmart, a new enrollment management and orientation program at PVCC. iStartSmart will impact approximately 900 new students to PVCC, fall, 2007. The student cohort will engage in mandatory placement assessment, mandatory course placement into developmental level courses, a mandatory orientation, and mandatory enrollment in one of two student college success courses. The goal of iStartSmart is to improve the academic success and retention of new, under-prepared students.
Department/Division Winner ($250)
Health & Exercise Science Division
Karen Fehr developed a document that gives faculty specific ideas on how to implement the five CCSSE benchmarks. This was then distributed to all full-time faculty for ideas for their classroom and to disseminate to the adjunct faculty they supervised as Program Directors. The goal of the Health and Exercise Science Division is to provide a consistent quality learning experience to students. The Student Engagement philosophies and methodologies for the Health and Exercise Science Division are derived primarily from the data and information received from CCSSE. The purpose of this handout was to communicate the expectations of the Division. The instructor evaluation process seen later in the semester evaluates progress towards meeting these expectations.
Individual Winner ($100)
Hedy Fossenkemper, Business and Information Technology
Hedy implemented Network Surveillance Software on the computers in her classroom. This software allows her, from the instructor station, to enable and or disable the student screens, allow or disallow any web sites or applications, and, best of all, to monitor and interact with the students’ activity. Additionally, the software can be used to answer survey questions with instant tallies, which the students find very engaging, since it's an anonymous activity.

Adjunct Faculty Evaluation Initiative
This CCSSE Action Team developed an adjunct self-evaluation tool and a student course evaluation tool that asks questions reflecting the quality practices described in the CCSSE instrument. The forms are currently being piloted with the goal of implementing, after revision, the new forms in FY2006-2007. Karen Fehr, Patti Marsh, and Steve Nicoloff were the leaders of the team on this project.
Department/Division Winners ($250)
Business/IT Division
The Business/IT Division created CDs providing information on their degree/certificate programs, classes, and faculty. The CDs were demonstrated and distributed to students in business/IT classes in April. Students can use the CD to opt into a database to later receive newsletters from the division highlighting new classes and programs of study. Patti Marsh lead the business IT marketing team of Dina Preston Ortiz, Hedy Fossenkemper and Gary Smith as well as the entire business IT division.
Library Division
Shelle Witten and the library faculty team created a strategy to encourage informal learning. Their plan includes: creating a leisure area furnished with popular reading materials and comfortable seating; sanctioning food and drink throughout the library; showcasing each semester favorite reading selections by the campus community; and debuting a blog to complement the library’s monthly book club discussion.
Student Athlete Academic Success Program
This CCSSE Action Plan developed a mandatory student academic planning process for student-athletes. The academic plan includes transfer goals, graduation requirements and check sheets, transfer eligibility requirements, and a semester by semester academic plan. Completion of and a review of the plan each semester are required prior to participation in athletic competition. 150 student athletes completed an academic plan. The team leaders of this project were Greg Silcox and Maggie Cullop while key staff included Andy Helman, Tony deShay and Helice Agria.
