There is a lot to learn when you want to switch from a film camera to a digital camera. This discussion seminar will help you find the right camera to meet your needs or to purchase as a gift. Learn basic digital operations and popular features of current models. If you are considering purchasing a camera, don’t do so until you take this class!

If you are looking to upgrade to a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera or just purchased one, this is the perfect beginning class for you. We will cover the differences between point and shoots and DSLR’s the basic functions and terms, as well as lenses and filters and how they can help you achieve great looking photos. Websites will be provided containing reviews and price comparisons to help save you money and choose the right camera for your needs. A Canon EOS 30D DSLR will be used for demonstrations. Receive a comprehensive booklet filled with helpful information that will be covered in the class.

Basic Digital Photography Techniques (Digital SLR)
Learn basic digital photography techniques. Learn how to get your camera off ‘program’ or ‘auto’ mode for better pictures. This class offers the opportunity to learn use of shutter and aperture modes for more effective images. Learn proper exposure metering techniques, depth of field, use of filters, flash as well as better composition and travel tips.
Student’s cameras must be a digital ‘single lens reflex (SLR) that can be set manually and have interchangeable lenses. No point and shoot cameras, please. Please read your instruction book and bring it with your camera to class. Field trip to the Desert Botanical Gardens will be on Sat, October 10, from 9-11am. Students must provide own transportation and admission fee.

Int/Adv Digital Photography: Your Portfolio

Intermediate Digital Photography
This is a hands-on workshop for digital camera users interested in learning intermediate photo skills and proper set-up of your camera. Learn to take your camera off of “auto” and take charge of the creative zones of your camera for capturing images under varying lighting conditions and scenes. Hike Spur Cross Ranch and learn how to photograph landscapes and plants in their native habitat. This course is for students who have completed basic digital photography classes and know how to operate their cameras. This hike will take place along the Cave Creek stream and some rocky terrain in the nature preserve. A tripod for your camera is required. Bring your camera, tripod, sturdy shoes, and water to drink. There is a nominal park admission fee paid at the parking area by each student.

Digital Photography Basics
With lecture, demonstration and homework, this class describes the basic digital camera settings for use under most shooting conditions. Image file transfers and basic computer file navigation are also covered. This class provides the student with the background needed to purchase the first digital camera or upgrade to the next level.
This class will also cover: pixels (how much is enough); image formats (jpg, tif); digital vs. optical zoom; focal length; white balance and ISO settings; file formats; basic editing; storage media; printing; email and web options; archiving; printers and photo paper.

This class is a follow-up to any basic digital photography class and involves much more detail into the camera settings and associated shooting conditions. Students will be given assignments to shoot pictures of individually preferred subject matter and apply the variation of camera settings specific to specific shooting conditions.
Students should bring cameras that have manual or semi automatic settings and the manual to class. You will become intimately knowledgeable of your digital camera settings and when to use them. No class November 11.
