Introduction to Oil Painting

Palette: wooden or acrylic

Brushes

• no. 8 flat bristle
• no. 4 flat bristle
• no. 2 flat bristle
• no. 8 bright sable brush
• no. 1 round sable brush
• no. 5 long filbert brush
• a standard palette knife for mixing colors and cleaning the palette

Paints:

• Titanium white (get the big tube)
• Thalo Blue
• Cadmium Red Light
• Yellow Ochre
• Burnt Sienna
• Burnt Umber
• Ivory Black

NOTE: Paint quality will reflect the price! There are student grade, medium grade, and studio (professional) grade paints.

Painting Surfaces

• Primed, Pre-stretched Canvas or
• Canvas Board ( do not go smaller than 11x14. 16x20 is a good size to start with)

Mediums and Solvents:

• Turpentine/ paint thinner or Turpenoid (for cleaning brushes)
• Linseed Oil/stand oil ( to speed up the drying of paints)
• Mineral Spirits: paint thinner (no odor).

Accessories:

• plenty of paper towels/rags for cleaning your brushes and palette.
