Now in its 17th year, Paradise Pumas Kids College is a structured enrichment program for young people, ages 7-12. Highly investigative learning opportunities are designed to enable children to expand their academic skills and make new friends. The class content is different from regular school curriculum and is taught by specialists in their field.
One Kids College, Two Campuses
Classes are offered at two campuses for Summer 2012. June classes are held at PVCC’s Union Hills campus, located at 18401 N 32nd St, Phoenix, 85032.
July programs are offered at PVCC Black Mountain, which is located at 34250 N 60th St, Scottsdale, 85266. Classes at PVCC Black Mountain are indicated by the room assignment beginning with BlkMtn.
Enrollment
Unless otherwise noted, registration is open until each class is filled or until three days before each class starts. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment is due at the time of registration. We regret no exceptions can be made to the age of students enrolling in classes.
Check-In on the First Day
Upon the first day of class your child must check in at the Kids College registration table in the Q-Building on the Union Hills Campus and in the lobby at PVCC Black Mountain. Students will only have to check in once, regardless of how many summer courses they attend.
Drop Off and Pick-up
Parents or guardians are expected to provide all transportation to and from campus. If children provide their own transportation (bike, bus or walk), it must be noted on the emergency forms. All children must be escorted to the Puma Den and signed out daily. Children will be released ONLY to those persons listed on the emergency information form. Any special concerns should be noted on this form and brought to the attention of the Kids College staff. Parents must notify Kids College of any absences at (602) 787-6804.
Campus Safety
We are always concerned for your child's safety. Parents are responsible for walking their child to and from The Puma Den. Students are not to be dropped off or picked up in the parking lots or dropped off in rooms before an instructor arrives. Instructors will provide assistance moving students to/from the Puma Den. No child may be left unattended at any time on campus. If this occurs the child will be brought to the Continuing Education office and parents will be called to pick him/her up.
Textbooks and Materials
Books and materials included unless otherwise stated in the description.
Behavior Standards
Appropriate behavioral guidelines are established with the goal of not only maintaining the physical and emotional well being of each student but also of teaching self-discipline, judgment, and manners. Parents are kept informed of problems as they arise and may be asked to follow through at home in special situations. If program staff determines that a child interferes with the learning of other students, cannot benefit from the program, or presents a danger to other children, parents will be requested to withdraw the child.
Illness and Emergencies
Once registered, Emergency/Medical forms will be sent to you. They can also be found online at www.paradisevalley.edu/ce/kids. These forms MUST be completed and returned to the Division of Continuing Education one week prior to the first day of class. Your child may only begin class if forms are returned.
l Children who are ill should not come to class. Illnesses include a running nose, cough, sore throat, unexplained rashes, swollen glands, head or stomach aches or a fever.
l If a child becomes ill or injured at PVCC, the parent or designated guardian will be notified promptly and will be expected to pick up their child from the program immediately. Parents will be responsible for all costs incurred in such emergencies.
l PVCC staff will administer no medications to your child -- no exceptions.
Class Cancellations
Courses that do not meet a minimum enrollment are subject to cancellation. If this should happen, every effort will be made to notify you by telephone to transfer you to another section, find an alternate course, or process your refund. PVCC reserves the right to cancel classes based on class size, to make other changes as College needs require and to change, without notice, any of the information, requirements, and regulations published in this schedule of classes.
Refund Policy
If a parent/guardian cancels registration, a full refund will be granted if PVCC is notified by 5pm on the Wednesday prior to the class start date. A $25 nonrefundable processing fee will be assessed for cancellations received after this time. All fees are non-refundable after the class starts. If an entire class is cancelled by the College, you will be entitled to a full refund.
Lunch
Meals from home are encouraged; however, meals from Red Devil Restaurant at Union Hills or from the Bad Donkey Restaurant at Black Mountain can be provided. If you’d like your child’s lunch provided, please enroll in the lunch section of the Puma Den. Children will have a choice between pizza or a sandwich meal at both locations, and can fill out their choices each morning on a lunch ticket.
Puma Den
Kids College staff supervises students at all times. Students taking a single morning or afternoon class have the option to enroll in the Puma Den, which provides supervision from
8-9am, 12-1pm and 4-5pm. Morning dropoff, lunchtime and evening pickup will be from Q-151 at the Union Hills campus, and from Room 109 at Black Mountain.
Students who are dropped off at class time and picked up immediately after do not need to enroll in the the Puma Den, but will be dropped off and signed out from that location. Children staying for any duration before or after classes must be enrolled.
Students enrolled in both morning and afternoon classes are required to enroll in the Puma Den, and will be escorted to lunch and to afternoon classes. The fee is $25 per week without meals, or $49 per week to include meals.
All children will be dropped off and signed out of the Puma Den in the mornings and afternoons.

New! Hyper Peppy Robotics (Ages 7 – 11)
Build and take home your own Hyper Peppy Robot! It's sound activated, responds to the clap of hands to get it moving and it has a very sensitive touch/sound sensor. When it comes in contact with an object it will automatically go into reverse, and then turn left before embarking on a new course. Most of all, it’s fast! Students will see the many gears, circuit board, microphone, and the mechanical drive system that they assemble. Students will also get to build other robots as a part of a small group. Be a part of robotic technology and have fun investigating the future effects it will have on our lives!

New! Advanced Robotics (Ages 7 – 11)
In this workshop, students will build and take home the Jungle Robot, an advanced level robot. They will assemble the gear box, see and learn how different types of gears mesh are driven by a motor, connect the motor, battery and microphone to a circuit board, which will program this sound-activated robot. There will also be time set aside in this workshop to put imagination and skills to the challenge. Working in small groups, students will build different robotic creatures and vehicles (these are not taken home), which will eventually be tested for speed, strength and endurance. They are taken apart and the parts are reused to build yet another robotic creation. Tires, motors, gears, wires and controllers are used to move these robots across the floor. Robotic creations will be tested in Sumo battles, tugs- of-war and vehicle distance timings.
