| The
University of Hong Kong is an English-speaking, and the oldest,
tertiary institution in Hong Kong. Its motto in Latin is
Sapientia et Virtus, meaning wisdom and virtue, and sometimes
cited as Foresight and Social Conscience.
Academically, the university
has traditionally been ranked as the top university in Hong Kong
and one of the most prestigious universities in Asia. In 2005,
the Times Higher Education Supplement ranked it 41st in the
world and has placed many of its programs within the world's top
50, including those from the arts and humanities, social
sciences, and biomedicine departments.
