Course Title Course Descriptions
 
Career Exploration Designed to assist students making career choices. Focuses on self-assessment in terms of educational and career opportunities and reasonable possibilities in the world of work. Includes assessment for personal/career interests, values, needs, attitudes, skills, and other potential, and exploration of occupational information to establish career and educational goals. Prerequisites: None
Career and Personal Development An overview of the process of career/life planning through self-awareness and understanding. Focus on specific skill development such as dealing with change, decision making, goal setting and understanding lifestyles. Provides opportunity to evaluate interests, skills and values. Emphasis on the development of a comprehensive career search process which includes current occupational information, specific tools for researching the job market and acquiring employment.
Eliminating Self-Defeating Behavior Designed to help students change behaviors that work against their potential, i.e., inferior feelings, shyness, nervousness, stage fright, under achievement etc. Focus on identifying undesirable thoughts, emotions and behaviors, for the purpose of developing alternative, and more desirable thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Prerequisites: None
Human Sexuality Enables students to view their own sexuality as a normal aspect of personal development. Examination of masculine and feminine differences and/or conflicts in social roles, emotions, and physical development. Prerequisites: None
Stress Management Reviews the sources of stress, the physiological effects and the psychological impact of stress on the individual. Provides strategies to reduce stress. Prerequisites: None
Developing Personal Spirituality Designed to encourage exploration of human spirituality. Focus on personal values and individual belief systems. Emphasis on developing an integrated concept of spirituality and applying it to one's own life. Prerequisites: None
Anger Management Provides an understanding of the emotion of anger, explores the types, origins and typical reactions to anger. Covers stress and the need for stress management in relation to anger. Examines personal anger patterns and feelings, and the use of effective interpersonal communications in effective anger management. Prerequisites: None
Building Self-Esteem Practice in specific methods for building and keeping self-esteem. Personal assessment of attitudes, values, support systems, and goals. Prerequisites: None
Women in Transition Designed to assist and support women who are experiencing life transitions. Emphasis on assessing self-potential, increasing self-confidence, managing life change, and exploring education/career/life options in terms of the realities of roles for women today. Prerequisites: None
Male-Female Communication Designed to provide students with a better understanding of male-female characteristics and how that along with a renewed emphasis on basic communication skills will improve communication between the sexes. Prerequisites: None
Dynamics of Leadership Designed to provide strategies that may be used when assuming leadership roles. Focus on improving supervisory confidence through the development of appropriate competitive behaviors, problem-solving skills, and techniques of leadership. Prerequisites: None.
Personal Money Management Designed to assist students in examining values related to spending, borrowing and saving money. Identify financial priorities and responsibilities associated with debt. Develop and follow a personal budget plan and learn strategies for maintaining a financially balanced personal life. Prerequisites: None
Strategies for College Success Focus on increasing student success through college orientation and personal growth, study skills development, and educational and career planning. Prerequisites: None
Study Skills Development Emphasis on increasing student success through the use of study strategies including materials organization, note-taking, reading, test-taking, memory, and critical and creative thinking. Prerequisites: None
Dynamic Parenting Designed to provide students with an understanding of parenting dynamics and effective communication between parents and children. Emphasis on building self-esteem, developing coping skills, behavior modification, and other techniques for improving parenting and communication in a variety of circumstances.
Contemporary Issues: Friendship Explores friendship as a key factor for overall wellness. Examines factors that make friendships work or fail. Studies friendship process from mental health perspective. Emphasis on skills and tools for finding, building, and maintaining a variety of friendships.
Peer Mentor Training Development and application of beginning skills and knowledge required to establish and maintain effective peer helping relationships in a college setting. Focus on the role, function, and responsibilities of the peer mentor; verbal and nonverbal communication skills; problem solving; and strategies and resources for first-year student success. Includes on-campus service-learning component
Intro. To Meditation: Vipassana Introduction to the practice of Vipassana (Insight) Meditation. Focus on the history, benefits and methodology of Vipassana meditation. Special emphasis on establishing a formal and informal meditation practice.
Creating College Success Strategies to create success in college. Methods for selecting and developing effective academic strategies, increasing self-awareness and developing self-management strategies. Elements of college resources and relationships with others explored in support of students' educational experience.
