Description:

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Music Business program is an innovative curriculum designed to prepare students for today's music industry. The certificate and degree with a music business emphasis are designed for both the performing musician and the business student with limited performing experience. This program combines a flexible curriculum with an emphasis in business and marketing, along with music industry related courses and experiences.

Students must consult with the Music Business Program Director, Music Department Chair or designee to select the Restricted Elective courses recommended for each specialization.

Program Competencies

  1. Apply procedures to copyright a song, publish it, and select an appropriate performance rights agency. (MUC109, MUC110)
  2. Locate and use different levels of music industry professionals including entertainment attorneys, managers, agents, and concert promoters. (MUC109, MUC110)
  3. Market musical products in such areas as music arranging/composing, score preparation, recording technology, audio engineering, postproduction for film and television, and the advertising industry. (MUC109, MUC110)
  4. Apply skills for marketing songs, recordings, and musical performances and develop a portfolio of such products for self-promotion. (MUC295AA)
  5. Explain the functions of a music business in the areas of entrepreneurship, the digital age, e-commerce, industry leadership, visionary development and the collaboration process. (MUC209, MGT253)
  6. Integrate human relations, communication, and technical skills as an intern in an appropriate business or industry. (MUC290AA)
  7. Describe the elements of music including rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre and dynamics in the context of the historical study of music (MH+++++)
