Benefits of Expansion of the Learning Function to a Second Dean
The intent of opening the leadership of learning functionality
to a second dean suggests that the College is placing an expanded
focus and emphasis on student learning. This model is not advocating
for the creation of another new “solo” or “stovepipe”, but a collaborative
team doubling leadership efforts to ensure that teaching and learning
are the core purposes of the college. This strategy also recognizes
that the complexity and number of initiatives directly related to
learning have expanded at the College and that it would be unreasonable
(due to span of control and other organizational parameters) to
place all functions under a single dean. It is also important to
note that many of the innovative pedagogies introduced at the College
span and cross the traditional dean of instruction and student services.
This model will also serve to elevate the importance of learning
that occurs in concert with classroom instruction such as the activities
in the Learning Support Center, service learning, and co-curricular
activities demonstrating learning outcomes.
It should be noted that while this model may be somewhat innovative,
a number of organizational factors remain the same including: all
faculty members maintain current reporting structure to the dean
of learning, maintenance of faculty leadership of academic programs,
direct reporting of the divisions to the dean of learning, and all
operational issues (curriculum, articulation, academic grievance,
scheduling, summer school) continuing to report to the dean of learning.
