Purpose

The purpose of this initial meeting is to look at all ideas, college strategic issues, community needs and future facility challenges. This is an ambitious and exciting process. Following the meeting SmithGroup will bring three conceptual master plan update designs back to the college for review.

Concerns

Concerns: (The following is a list of brain stormed general concerns of the current facilities)
  • scheduling (prime time, classroom use)
  • we are out of classroom space during prime time
  • specialized space i.e.,
    • EMT
    • ART - dry, ceramics
    • collaborative learning - students in groups of 25 - 30 for a large block of time
  • NOISY - music classes (need for detached music facilities)
  • computer classroom space
  • occupational area classrooms, regular and specialized
  • Bio technology - possible future academic program
  • Parking -- right place, convenience
  • Partnership with NAU, classrooms for expanded on-campus offering
  • Agri-business charter school classrooms
  • non credit programs --
    • seniors need 1st floor classrooms and closer parking
    • Kids College - separate areaseniors don"t have a place to congregate away from "youngsters"
  • more conference meeting rooms - and larger - for campus and community meetings
  • conference space seating for 400 to 500 people (theatre style), and 250 (round table seating) with ability to divide for breakout rooms
  • Technology is a major factor, world mostly going to wireless
  • many students in "our area" go to other MCCD colleges
  • Cafeteria area not large enough (kitchen is probably adequate)
  • seniors do not have a place to congregate away from "youngsters"
  • science labs at capacity
  • central plant capacity?
  • college union area is not large enough
Accessibility:
  • adaptive technology
  • quiet spaces
  • labs need to be accessible
  • flooring in all buildings need to be designed for accessibility
New ideas:
  • central area with water feature to attract people (community space)
  • expanded landscaping
  • places to sit (exterior living rooms)
  • eliminate driveway along the front of campus
  • complete ring road around campus
  • Align college name with changing external factors
Landscaping:
  • Jesse and employees have done a good job keeping the Sonoran desert on campus as it is quickly disappearing around Phoenix. Keep desert; if all PVCC is concrete, buildings and grass, students will not know where they are. Our campus can be a real "jewel" of desert landscape.
  • more spaces like amphitheater for outside learning opportunities
  • Smoke-free environment outside: people congregate around building entrances and smoke -- real problem (manage the smoking/non smoking issue)
  • use reclaimed water
  • condense space with narrower walks - create new campus feel
  • outdoor activities for:
    • science
    • wildlife viewing
    • astronomy
    • BBQ
    • music
    • dance
(Desert Ridge shopping center has areas for people to congregate with trees and canopies with misters which creates an atmosphere to bring people together)

Student Services:
  • One Stop Shop for student services
  • B Building - different approach
  • more community interaction -- become more of a beacon
  • Welcome Center -- in center of parking lot? security offices?
  • LSC and Advising inadequate
  • facility clusters for matriculation services, learning support and student development
  • B Building space is inadequate
  • Relocation of Child Care Center; retrofit building for other use
Common areas in B not large enough
  • huge increase in students "hanging out"
  • students hang out in E building hallway
  • cafeteria seating inadequate
Distance Learning:
  • mostly our own students (co-enrolled in traditional classes)
  • technology
  • blended classrooms (hybrid learning)
Workforce Training
  • need dedicated area
  • major linkage with businesses
Athletics/recreation/physical education instruction:
  • Multi-purpose recreation center
  • Implement college athletics strategic plan (build out of facilities)
NAU:
  • would like more classrooms, with technology if possible
  • do not need science labs
  • cannot own a building in Maricopa County but could have a long lease
  • PVCC students benefit
Land Area:
  • Major drop-off on south side of campus (create variable elevation)
  • Flood control space can not be used for buildings - only athletic fields (revisit with Flood Control District)
County:
  • The county has contacted PVCC/MCCD regarding the adjacent land they are looking to divest themselves of in the next 3 - 5 years in favor of going farther out in the county. It is 315 acres which encompasses the golf course, park and library. This land is for educational use or a public park only.

  • This information is not for general knowledge at this time.
Art facility not adequate

Should Faculty offices be consolidated in one area or distributed throughout campus

Multi-purpose recreation center should be developed

If retention basin is used and the area is filled in from PVC to Library, there should be a connection -- could be a bridge and landscaping

Deck parking construction cost is estimated at $12,000 per space

Art in Public Places

Vision

What is our vision?
  • How large do we wish to become?
  • 12,000 to 15,000 students?
  • about the size of SCC
  • limited facilities equals limited enrollment
  • district direction seems to be to build out existing campus before going outside
Safety
  • safety especially at night as campus is dark
  • "open" areas
  • health
  • protect people
  • securing equipment
  • lighting = not pollute night sky
More dollar needs than dollars available

Facilities update should reflect year round operation and expanded summer courses - Summer?

Library:
  • integration of whole learning experience
  • needs instructional space
  • study spaces for individuals
  • "cafe" area for students
Partnership with community businesses:
  • bookstore
  • food services
  • copy center
  • Starbucks
PAC (Performing Arts Center) location needs to be integrated into the plan

Separate building for Music classes (1,800 sq ft) is currently being discussed

Administrative office building area no longer adequate; building could be adapted for other use
