On Wednesday afternoon, May 15th, the PVCC Facilities Master Plan Update Committee met for approximately ninety minutes to discuss the Smith Group's presentation of tentative plans for developing our future facilities.

The Smith Group proposed some rather broad ideas (only in the formative stages at this point) that include: placement of the next major academic multi-storied structure in the space between the main campus and the Fitness Center, moving the Child Care Center into the present Fitness Center, and moving the location of the tennis courts into the retention basin. Other areas which were discussed included the challenges of providing for efficient deliveries of goods for the bookstore and cafeteria (there is concern with delivery trucks impacting student and day care traffic), the development of the physical plant, coordinating the location of the PAC, and placement of parking lots.

The key to all of these plans depend on sufficient student and faculty parking and adequate access to the campus. The Smith Group emphasized that we can grow as much as we want: PVCC currently has the space to grow; however, the primary issue is sufficient/convenient parking and appropriate access roads to support our facilities.

With the insights gained from today's discussion, the Smith Group will now take a brief hiatus and return in the fall with greater development of their plans, and they intend to provide more opportunities for campus community input.
