Theater and Music Summer Workshops
All workshops are FREE and open to students and community members. Seating is limited for each workshop, so reservations are recommended. Please call 602-787-6595 to reserve a seat at each workshop.
FREE THEATRE WORKSHOPS:
BASIC THEATRICAL DESIGN WORKSHOP
TIME: 2PM-5PM

INSTRUCTOR: ERIK H. REID
Participants will work in teams to create preliminary ideas for a set based on the needs of the musical and will then redefine their ideas as discussions develop. Discussions will include basic design elements such as line, color, scale, and stock scenery, practicality, scenic requirements for telling the story of the play, directors’ visions and budget. The novice and the professional should enjoy the workshop as they delve into the world of the theatrical designer. The show we are designing will remain a secret until the beginning of the workshop, no cheating.
BASIC THEATRICAL LIGHTING WORKSHOP

Lighting is used in the theatre to draw the focus of the audience directly to what you wish them to see and away from what you wish to hide. Lighting isolates the action, adds mood, allows you to see the action of a play, and tell the story the way you wish. This workshop is suitable for acting, directing, technical students as well as the interested bystander. Through hands on and discussion, you will become familiar enough with the process to have a greater appreciation for the graceful and labor intensive art of lighting. Be introduced to the basics of theatre lighting: Light color theory, placement, how to read a light plot, basics of hanging and focusing lights, lightboard operation, how to record light cues.
This workshop is available to the novice and will walk you through all of the steps of a lighting designer, master electrician, lighting technician, and lightboard operator. Through hands on and discussion, you will become familiar enough with the process to have a greater appreciation for the graceful and labor intensive art of lighting.
THEATRE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

Participants will work thru a series of problem solving activates geared towards real world theatre management situations followed by group discussions. Participants will get a taste of what it is like to run a rehearsal, call a show, run a production meeting, call a truck pack, load in a show, run an audition and much much more.
Discussions will include the basics behind all levels of theater management from stage management to production management all the way up to producing and casting. We will touch on all aspects of the business sides of theatre. This workshop is great for beginner theatre managers, actors and anyone interested in learning how the theatre business really works.
COSTUME DESIGN WORKSHOP

This workshop would cover the basics of being a costume designer, from script and character analysis to designing a show to collaborating with the production team and wardrobe department to produce the costumes. It would also go over creating a resume, education and costume programs, and getting started in the business as a designer.
COSTUME PRODUCTION WORKSHOP

This workshop would cover the basics of how the costume shop/costume department is run. It would teach participants the following:
- Who is who in the costume shop and what do they do?
- How can students get involved in costume production during a show at PVCC?
- The basics of hand sewing (how to sew buttons, hooks/bars, snaps, and how to "quick rig" a costume for a quick change in a show).
- How to use a sewing machine and serger
- If interested, how to use an industrial sewing machine
FREE MUSIC WORKSHOPS:
EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC AND MOVEMENT IN THE PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM

This workshop presents ways to utilize music and movement in early childhood settings. Learn about developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, action songs, finger plays and singing games for early childhood as well as how to capture a young child's attention with music. Come prepared to move!
USING MUSIC IN THE ELEMENTARY CLASSROOM

Designed for non-musicians, this workshop will discuss the role of music in the elementary classroom both as a content area and as a supplement to other non-music learning activities. Participants will be introduced to the characteristics of the child’s musicianship and its development throughout the elementary years. Additionally, this workshop includes lesson plans with musical activities for the elementary curriculum.
ADVANCED RHYTHMS WORKSHOP

Learn to perform, compose, and improvise complex rhythms using the tools of the Karnatic (South Indian classical) tradition in a Western context. Inspired by the advanced rhythm program at the Amsterdam Conservatory, this workshop will explore phrases in 5 and 7, polyrhythmic cycles, vocal syllables, ratio relationships, and more. The rhythmic principles covered can be applied to any instrument and any style of music, especially jazz and contemporary classical music. Musicians of all levels and styles are welcome. ARDUINO WORKSHOP 1

It is becoming more and more common for art installations, sculptures, and musical installations to be responsive to the world, either through direct interactivity with observers or through a more general interactivity with the environment. The technology underlying these types of installations is the microcontroller, a chip which can act as the intermediate between a computer and real-world sensors. The Arduino is an inexpensive microcontroller that was created for hobbyists and tinkerers to create interactive art, music controllers, robots, and gizmos of all types. This workshop will introduce the technology and give participants an overview of possible projects. No experience necessary.

Great sounds and performances are the foundation to any good recording, but great individual tracks are only part of the story. Grooving tracks also need the skilled hand and ear of a mix engineer to bring all the elements together. In this workshop learn how the pro’s prepare a sessions for mixing, sculpt the sound with EQ and compression tools, and bring it to life with killer delays and reverb. Today’s artists want and need unique mixing approaches to support their vision. Learn how our pro’s make tracks shine with creative uses of plug-ins and hardware that you can apply to your own tracks, giving your mixes a sonic edge over the competition.
All workshop participants must supply their own headphones and a ¼-inch adapter.
