Course Title
Course Descriptions
Intro to Dance
Overview of the filed of dance focusing on origins, historical development, and cultural characteristics of various styles of dance. Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.
Worlds Dance Perspectives
Exploration, analysis, synthesis and evaluation of the role of dance in various cultures around the world. Prerequisites: ENG101 or ENG107, or equivalent. DAH100 is strongly suggested but not required. See pages 9-18 for dates & details: GIL Back to schedule.
Ballet I

Introduction to the theory and practice of ballet at the beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. Prerequisites: None. May be repeated for a total of two (2) credit hours. Co-requisite: DAN138 for dance majors.

Ballet II

Theory and practice of ballet at the advanced beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. Prerequisites: DAN131 or permission of instructor. May be repeated for a total of two (2) credit hours. Back to schedule.

Ballet III

Theory and practice of ballet at the advanced beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. Prerequisites: DAN134 or permission of instructor. May be repeated for a total of two (2) credit hours. Back to schedule.

Modern Dance I

Modern Dance II

Modern Jazz Dance I

Introduction to the theory and practice of modern jazz dance at the beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. Prerequisites: None. May be repeated for a total of two (2) credit hours.

Modern Jazz Dance II

Theory and practice of modern jazz dance at the advanced beginning level. Development of movement quality and performance skills. Prerequisites: DAN133 or permission of instructor. May be repeated for a total of two (2) credit hours. Back to schedule.

Special Projects

Organized and tailored around the interests and needs of the individual student. Structured to provide an atmosphere of individualized research and study paralleled by professional expertise and guidance. Professional-type facilities and equipment available for student use. Allows the best aspects of independent study and individualized learning to be combined to maximize student development. Prerequisites: Permission of Program Director or instructor. Dance Performance

An introduction to the process and practice of dance performance. May be repeated for a total of two (2) term credit hours. Prerequisites: Students must enroll in section 4260 and one of the following: DAN131, DAN132, DAN134, DAN135, or DAN232. Back to schedule.

Dance Production I

Introduction to the elements of light, sound, and scenery as they relate to the art of dance. Prerequisites: None.

Rhythmic Theory for Dance Exploration of the ways in which music, time, pitch, and energy work with the art of dance. Emphasis on reading and writing music notation and performing movement that correlates to the notation and vice versa. Prerequisites: None.

Choreography I

Study of basic dance choreography to include construction of a phrase, structure and form in a composition, and the basic elements of time, space and energy. Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.

Choreography II

Exploration of the craft of choreography at the intermediate level. Experimentation with the various approaches to contemporary choreography as established by 20th century artists. Prerequisites: DAN264. Back to schedule.

Dance Practicum A culmination of coursework for the dance major requiring completion of an extended choreographic work from conception to performance. Also required a final evaluative paper on the successes and challenges encountered throughout the project. Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.Back to schedule.
Dance Sampler: Capoeira, Brazilian Martial Art Dance

High energy Afro-Brazilian martial art integrating self-defense, music, song and dance. For students wishing to gain upper and lower body strength, stamina, and muscle tone along with an understanding of Afro-Brazilian culture. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.

World Dance:
Middle Eastern Dance

Theory and practice of Middle Eastern dance. Development of movement quality and performance skills.
Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.

Dance Sampler: Flamenco

For the beginner flamenco student: Learn how to add Spanish flare to your life and also learn the exciting regional dances of Spain! Flamenco greatly improves posture and teaches you to move your arms, hands, and feet with precision, grace and elegance. Intricate foot control and placement are covered in detail in order to pave the road for solid flamenco training.

Get introduced to Hip Hop at the beginning/intermediate level. Development of movement, quality and performance skills. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.

World Dance:
Belly Dance
Learn the newest dance craze. This Middle Eastern Dance will have you celebrating the female shape learning the Hip Slide, Rib Cage Slide, Undulations, Snake Arms, and more. Work your abdominals and have fun!
Social Dance: Ballroom

Theory and practice of ballroom dance. Development of movement quality and performance skills individually, with a partner or in a group setting. May include Salsa, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, Foxtrot, Waltz, American Tango, International Ballroom, or Ballroom Performance. Prerequisites: None.

Social Dance: Senior Ballroom

Dance your way to better health. Learning includes Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz . Dancing has proven to be as effective as bicycling and treadmill training. Prerequisites: None.

Theory and practice of Latin dance. Development of movement quality and performance skills individually, with a partner or in a group setting. May include Salsa, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Rumba, Bachata, International Latin Ballroom, or Latin Ballroom Performance. Prerequisites: None. Back to schedule.

Social Dance: Argentine Tango

Theory and practice of tango dance. Development of movement quality and performance skills individually, with a partner or in a group setting. May include Argentine Tango, American Tango or International Style Tango. Prerequisites: None.

Continued practice of the hottest Latin dances including Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, Bachata and Cha Cha Cha. Prerequisites: PED102UB or DAN125AC or permission of instructor. May be repeated for credit.

Theory and practice of swing dance. Development of movement quality and performance skills individually, with a partner or in a group setting. May include East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, West Coast Swing, or Foxtrot. Prerequisites: None.

Get introduced to the new dance craze. Learn all styles of swing, including the West Coast Swing style. Have fun while exercising.May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: None. No partner necessary.

Be prepared for that next wedding, reception or big event. Learn traditional social dancing, including Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, Quick-step, and Viennese Waltz. Learn to dance with different partners to music while learning a variety of ballroom dances and developing an understanding of each dance, whether it's the sharp drama of Tango or the grace of the Waltz.
