Puma PROFILE on Cindy Shoenhair-
Nov. 1999
Sports Editor
Cindy Shoenhair.
She is mother of four (two of whom are twins), a breast cancer
survivor, and the assistant athletic administrator of PVCC’s athletics,
all in a day’s work.
Since 1988, Shoenhair has been teaching at PVCC. In 1995, she took the
job of assistant athletic administrator.
Shoenhair grew up in northern Illinois and graduated from ASU with her
B.A. in physical education. She later received her masters in exercise
physiology at ASU.
Now under PVCC athletic director, Paul Dale, Shoenhair runs the college’s
athletic programs. Athletics
at PVCC started out with three sports: cross country for men and women,
tennis for men and women, and golf for men. This fall they have added
men’s soccer. Women’s soccer will follow next fall. “I
administer the programs and operate the programs so they are successful
in terms of not just winning, but giving students the opportunity that
we want them to have while they are here as athletes representing our
college.” At
the same time, she is mom and manager of a house full of children. I
spend a lot of time on athletics at work, so sometimes at home even I
have to grade papers and get ready for my classes at night. But I have
four little kids so I usually try to work later at night after they have
gone to bed,” says Shoenhair. “My four kids are playing soccer and my
oldest is playing basketball. We have a lot of sporting events to run
around to.” What
drives Shoenhair? She believes that whatever you do in life, you should
do to the best of your ability, giving it everything you have. “My
best memory of athletics here was last year when I was at the cross country
nationals when our cross country team won. It gave me chills to watch,
not only that they won, but how hard every person on that team ran even
though they were so far ahead of the other teams,” says Shoenhair. “They
gave a 110 percent that day, and it was really an awesome experience to
be a part of that.” Shoenhair
foresees continued expansion of athletic teams and resources at PVCC. “In five years I see this program with additional facilities,” says Shoenhair. “We are building a track and a soccer field which should be breaking ground by the beginning of January and I see additional fields. We are going to build facilities for our existing sports and then an advisory committee will make a decision on the next sport that will be brought in." Reprinted
