El Mercado is hosted by business and marketing students from the ITESM de Hermosillo and is an opportunity for Mexican and U.S. students to interface on cross-cultural business and communication issues. Free food samples and promotional items are provided.

Mr. Ansary will be speaking about growing up in Afghanistan from his perspective on politics, culture, and religion.  His presentation will also include insights on the current situations within the country.

A ceramic skills presentation, which includes the potter's wheel, and hand building with slabs of clay. His work is contemporary in style, relying upon juxtaposition of contrasting textures, form and color to create a strong emotional effect.

Mata Ortiz Ceramics
Thursday, August 28 @12:30P and 6:00P in the Art Studio

Luci and Lorenzo Bugarini are returning to our campus to show their amazing skill at transforming simple clay into beautiful works of art. They will form a pot, polish the surface and paint an intricate decoration using a human hair brush. This is a rare opportunity to witness firsthand: "The Miracle of Mata Ortiz"

World Music Marathon
Saturday, September 27 @ 7:30-9:30pm in the Studio Theatre

Anya - Afro-Cuban/Afro-Brazillian music, Mariachi Corazon de Phoenix, and Nosotros--Latin/South American music will perform as part of fundraiser for the Palomino Elementary School’s library. $5 admission, plus a children’s book. All proceeds will be donated to the Palomino Elementary School library.

Ethnic Dialogue

Dr. Joseph L. Graves, Jr., Professor of Evolutionary Biology, will be speaking about his research and recent publication entitled, The Emperor's New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium. Dr. Graves host a book signing immediately following his presentation.

Chinese Visiting Artists
Thursday, February 6 @ 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM in the Art Studio

Chinese ceramists, Luo Xiao Ping and Luo Junya, host a one-day presentation and demonstration on the traditional methods for making teapots. Teapots and other wares will be for sale.

Diversity Panel and Potluck
Thursday, April 17 @ 10:30AM in B208

A panel presentation with individuals representing a variety of backgrounds, which include age, disabilities, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc. The presentation will be followed by a potluck luncheon.

Dorothy Ellis Barnett’s “Losing Geography, Discovering Self”
September 17, 2002 @ 2pm  PVCC Room B208
Ms. Barnett has won numerous awards for scholarship and writing. She is founding editor of two Texas poetry journals. She writes fiction, poetry, nonfiction and screen-plays. She is the Program Coordinator for Creative Writing at Austin Community College where she is Associate Professor of Creative Writing.

Tom Miller

Mr. Miller has written about the American Southwest and Latin America for more than thirty years. He is the editor of Travelers' Tales Cuba: True Stories and serves as Adjunct Research Associate in the Latin American Area at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Denise Chávez
October 1, 2002 @ 7pm PVCC Room B208

Ms. Chávez is a novelist, short story writer, playwright, actress, and teacher. She is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at New Mexico State University. Her one-woman show, Women in the State of Grace, has toured throughout the United States.

Rubén Martínez
October 10, 2002 @ 10:30am • PVCC • Student Union, B-building

Mr. Martínez is an Emmy Award-winning journalist, poet, author, and performer. He is a correspondent for Religion & Ethics news Weekly, WNET-PBS, Independent View, KQED-PBS, and contributing essayist on All Things Considered, National Public Radio. He has appeared as a commentator on CNN, ABC's Nightline and Politically Incorrect, and PBS's Frontline.

O. Ricardo Pimentel
October 15, 2002 @ 9am • PVCC • Room B208

Mr. Pimentel is an editorial columnist for The Arizona Republic and writes on public policy with an emphasis on Latino affairs. He is also nationally syndicated with Tribune Media Services. He has authored two fiction books. He was managing editor of the Tucson Citizen, and a Washington D.C. correspondent for McClatchy Newspapers, covering Congress, federal agencies and the U.S. Supreme Court.

David Lee
October 21, 2002 @ 12 Noon • PVCC • Room B208

Mr. Lee is currently the Chair of the Department of Language at Southern Utah University. Known as Utah's "Pig Poet" for his many poems of rural life and particularly poems about pig farming, Lee is a poet with a national reputation. He has published more than seven full-length books of poetry. His collection of poems, My Town, was the winner of the 1995 Western States Book Award for Poetry. He was named Utah's First State Poet Laureate in 1997, and will serve in the position for five years.

Alberto Ríos

Mr. Ríos is a poet and Regents' Professor of English at Arizona State University. His is the author of several books, one of which won the Western States Book Award. Rios holds numerous awards including the Arizona Governor's Arts Award and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Stella Pope Duarte
November 7, 2002 @ 10:30am • PVCC • Room B208

Ms. Duarte is the critically acclaimed author of Fragile Night, a short story collection. She was born and raised in South Phoenix, in the barrios of Sonorita, and her background heavily inspires and influences her writing. She has taught courses at the University of Phoenix and Arizona State University, and currently works as Chair of counseling at Cesar Chavez High School.


Spring 2002

Peace and Conflict Resolution Presentation
Sir Ronnie Flanagan, Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (formerly the Royal Ulster Constabulary).
Presentation included political science, intercultural relations, and many other related topics.

Nature vs. Nurture Art Workshop
Artists, Justine Mantor and Jean Thomsen, conducted a two-day workshop to heal nature and heal ourselves through the use of landscapes and milagros.

Chinese Ceramics Presentation
Luo Xiao Ping and Luo Juna demonstrated teapot ceramics and sold tiny ceramic teapot necklaces and pottery tools.


Fall 2001

Mexican Artists Series
Erika Harrsch is a Mexican painter from San Miguel de Allende, who uses the human figure in innovative ways.

MAYA: Masters of Time
Lecture and slide presentation by Art Humanities professor, Gene Rister. Co-Sponsored with the Friends of Mexican Art.

Glass Sculpture Symposium
Glass Sculptress Ana Thiel from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico conducted a two-day symposium on glass sculpture.

Mata Ortiz Potters Workshop
Award-winning potters Lucy and Lorenzo Bugarini of Juan Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, Mexico demonstrated their ceramic art form at PVCC.

Ceramic Art Workshop
Three-day workshop featuring Juan Quezada, founder of the Mata Ortiz Chihuahua, Mexico ceramic artists colony.
