| The Paradise Valley Community College Center for International Studies Presents... Mata Ortiz Pottery Workshop |
Join our group for a fun-filled intensive exploration of the pottery-making village of Mata Ortiz. Located in the state of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico, Mata Ortiz is internationally known for its beautiful hand-made pottery. We travel by van over 500 miles from PVCC to Mata Ortiz, to begin our experience. Upon arrival we are housed in the quaint adobe inn: Posada de los Ollas. This will be our homebase during our week. Usually, potters bring their wares to the inn soon after we arrive, eager to show us their work, and take advantage of our wonder at the beautiful pots. |

Our first day in Mata Ortiz is spent at the home of our instructors: Carmen and Jesus Veloz. Carmen demonstrates the techniques she uses to make her high quality pots, then assists the students in making their own pots. After a hearty lunch back at the Posada, we begin our tour of the village's five barrios to visit the homes of some of the best potters in Mexico. In the evening we begin thinking about the type of design we wish to put on our pots on Thursday, and practice painting with the same type of brush used in Mata Ortiz, one made of human hair. |

Tuesday, our second day, we usually go into the mountains near the village to dig the fine white clay Carmen uses to make her pots. Wednesday, we sand and polish our now dry pots to prepare them for painting on Thursday. Friday, is firing day for our class. Jesus organizes the students and demonstrates how to place the pots and fuel for proper firing. Friday evening, is fiesta time! Lots of food, music and dancing on the patio celebrate the end of a wonderful week in Mata Ortiz. Saturday morning, the vans are loaded and we make our way out of the village and on the long road home. On the way we stop to visit the beautiful new anthropological museum adjacent to the magnificent ruins of Paquime, the ancient Casas Grandes civilization structure which housed thousands of people. The museum tells the history of the Paquime people and how advanced technologically they were. |
