Center for International Studies Mission Statement:

The Paradise Valley Community College Center for International Studies provides a wide array of innovative instructional and student development programs in international education with a primary focus on and specialization in Asia and Latin America.

Center for International Studies Vision Statement:
Cultivate Paradise Valley Community College as a center of international learning with recognized expertise in Asia and Latin America.

Strategic Plan:

  1. Cultivate Paradise Valley Community College as a center for international learning (S.I. 1-6, 2, 3, 6)

    1. Maintain international education opportunities for students, i.e., Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara

    2. Offer short-term study abroad opportunities each year (on-going)

    3. Explore relationships with other private national and international institutions  (on-going)

    4. Maintain a passive international student recruitment process via the Center’s web page (on-going)

    5. Increase student participation with the refugee division of Catholic Charities (07/08)

    6. Market the International Studies Academic Certificates, which emphasize Asia and/or Latin America (08/09)

    7. Develop an articulation pathway between PVCC’s Academic Certificate with emphasis on Latin America and University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies (08/09)

    8. Expand speakers bureau/global villages to include evening classes (08/09)

    9. Develop international service-learning experiences (08/09)

    10. Strengthen the articulation agreement with ASU for international business students (08/09)

    11. Develop a sister college relationship with an institution in our focus area (Pacific Rim--Asia and/or Latin America) (09/10)

    12. Develop international education scholarship fundraising avenues (09/10)

  2. Increase international education professional development (S.I. 1-6, 2, 3, 6)

    1. Continue to provide employees with culture and language immersion opportunities (on-going)
    2. Provide faculty with content-based field study, institute, and seminar opportunities focused on Asia and Latin America (on-going)
    3. Increase faculty and administrator participation in the Association of Regional Centers/Asian Studies Development Program (on-going)
    4. Participate in the Community Colleges for International Development (07/08)
    5. Increase participation in MCCCD coordinated exchanges and fellowships (08/09)
    6. Host local and national conferences and workshops with Asia and Latin America foci (09/10)
    7. Connect college administration to members of the International Consortium for Education and Economic Development (09/10)
  3. Develop and expand programs and opportunities that promote an interface between student, community, and employee groups (S.I. 1-6, 6)

    1. Offer short-term study abroad opportunities each year that target community participation (on-going)
    2. Host visiting artists, scholars, and other professionals for interdisciplinary presentations in international studies (on-going)
    3. Conduct Paradise Valley Community College International Film Festival each year with a different focus (on-going)
    4. Collaborate on grant projects with college departments and divisions, other academic institutions, and/or community organizations (on-going)
    5. Explore connections with World Affairs Council (08/09)
  4. Evaluate the operations of and resources associated with the Center for International Studies (S.I. 1-6, 2, 6)

    1. Continually evaluate and update the Center’s programs via the web page (on-going)
    2. Expand and update library collection of international resources (on-going)
    3. Hire full-time director to administer the Center for International Studies (07/08)
    4. Increase marketing and publicity of the Center’s programs via the college’s institutional advancement department (08/09)
The Center for International Studies solidly connects with the following Paradise Valley Community College strategic issues:

  1. What should PVCC do to become a more learning centered college? Indicator #6—Learners are encouraged to develop relationships and connections with faculty, staff, students, and peers.

  2. How will PVCC actualize its vision of becoming a comprehensive, niche-focused community college?

  3. What can PVCC do to address the needs of the increasing numbers of ethnic minority students, other culturally diverse student groups, and a changing student body forecasted for the future?

  4. How can PVCC influence enrollment and retention patterns to increase access and optimize the utilization of our resources and facilities?

  5. How can PVCC deepen its connections with the Northeast Valley community?
