IS Strategic Plan

Center for International Studies Mission Statement:

The Paradise Valley Community College Center for International Studies provides a wide array of innovative instructional and student development programs in international education with a primary focus on and specialization in Asia and Latin America.

Center for International Studies Vision Statement:

Cultivate Paradise Valley Community College as a center of international learning with recognized expertise in Asia and Latin America.

Strategic Plan:

I. Provide international education development opportunities for students

  • Promote international education opportunities for students
  • Offer short-term study abroad opportunities each year (on-going)
  • Explore relationships with other private national and international institutions for 2+2 articulation agreements, i.e., Middlesex University, Prague College, etc. (on-going)
  • Maintain a passive international student recruitment process via the Center’s web page (on-going)
  • Increase student participation with the refugee division of Catholic Charities (on-going)
  • Market the International Studies Academic Certificates, which emphasize Asia and/or Latin America (on-going)
  • Develop an articulation pathway between PVCC’s Academic Certificate with Asia/ Latin America and Melekian Center @ ASU (11/12)
  • Expand speakers bureau/global villages to include evening classes (10/11)
  • Develop and offer international service-learning experiences (10/11)
  • Strengthen the articulation agreement with ASU for international business students (11/12)
  • Develop a sister college relationship with an institution in our focus area (12/13)
  • Develop international education scholarship fundraising avenues (11/12)
  • Conduct Paradise Valley Community College International Film Festival each year with a different focus (on-going)
  • Expand international and national social justice educational opportunities (11/12)
  • Offer and market Islamic-focused courses in key divisions, which will lead to an academic certificate (12/13)

II. Increase international education professional development opportunities for employees

  • Continue to provide employees with culture and language immersion opportunities (on-going)
  • Provide faculty with content-based field study, institute, workshop, and seminar opportunities focused on Asia and Latin America (on-going)
  • Increase faculty and administrator participation in the Association of Regional Centers for Asian Studies/Asian Studies Development Program (on-going)
  • Increase participation in MCCCD coordinated exchanges and fellowships (on-going)
  • Host local and national conferences and workshops with Asia and Latin America foci (on-going)

III. Develop and expand programs and opportunities that promote an interface between student, community, and employee groups

  • Offer short-term study abroad opportunities each year that target community participation (on-going)
  • Host visiting artists, scholars, and other professionals for interdisciplinary presentations in international studies (on-going)
  • Expand the annual Worldview Series, which is a collaborative effort between academic and student services, to include lectures, panels, interactive programs, etc. (11/12)
  • Conduct Paradise Valley Community College International Film Festival each year with a different focus (on-going)
  • Collaborate on grant projects with college departments and divisions, other academic institutions, and/or community organizations (on-going)
  • Explore connections with World Affairs Council (on-going)

IV. Evaluate the operations of and resources associated with the Center for International Studies

  • Continually evaluate and update the Center’s programs via the web page (on-going)
  • Expand and update library collection of international resources (on-going)
  • Hire full-time director to administer the Center for International Studies (on-going effort)
  • Increase marketing and publicity of the Center’s programs (on-going)
