Position Title: Temporary Carpenter
Department: Maintenance and Operations; Buildings and Grounds
Job Duties:
Performs journey level repair, construction, and alteration of wooden articles and structures.
This position works in the area of Maintenance and Operation. Work contacts include administrators, faculty, students, the public, and representatives of the trade. Equipment used includes drills, table saws, jointer, lathe, drill press, routers, planners, squares, rulers, and various types of power and hand tools.
This position reports to the Director of Buildings and Grounds; receives general direction regarding routine and standard matters and specific instructions regarding non-routine and highly sensitive matters.
May direct the work of carpenter trainees, students, temporaries, and other maintenance workers.
Performs rough and finished carpentry work on wood, acrylics, and other materials; performs mill and cabinet work involving construction, finishing, and repair of structures, furniture, cabinets, and equipment; repairs floors and roofs; hangs and adjusts doors; performs remodeling or new construction of assigned areas; removes and rearranges walls and doorways; repairs or installs drywall and suspended ceilings; builds specialty items to order; makes cost estimates and purchases construction materials; maintains work records; installs and repairs locks; installs book shelves, paneling, chalk boards, bulletin boards, movie screens, shelves; builds concrete forms; maintains tools and machinery; may direct the work of others; performs general maintenance work as required, including clean-up; performs related duties as assigned.
Skills Required:
Knowledge of: methods, materials, and equipment used in the carpentry and woodworking trade, including both rough and finished carpentry; basic qualities of various woods used for various purposes; use and operation of mechanical tools; building code requirements as they relate to carpentry work.
Ability to: interpret drawings and blueprints; perform both rough and finished carpentry; use and care for carpentry tools; follow written and verbal instructions; keep accurate records; perform basic mathematical calculations; make cost estimates; work cooperatively with others.
Training and Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. An example of this would be Journey level experience in rough or finished carpentry.
Must possess a Journey level card.
Positions in this class may be required to lift 50lb objects and work in awkward and cramped positions and heights over 20 feet. Some positions may require a Class D driver's license.
