Searching Hints:
- Be specific -
avoid using general topics or words, e.g. cancer.
- Exact Phrase searches
terms exactly as entered. Place quotation marks around the phrase
such as "terminal diseases" and the exact phrase will
be searched.
- You can use Boolean operators
to link terms together; limit the search to a specific title;
and /or restrict the search to a particular date range. These
include : AND (to limit or return less articles) OR (to expand
to return more articles) NOT (to exclude)
- Grouping words in parentheses
allows you to control the search to include the words from
left to right in groups. Example: Generalized Search: heart
or lung and blood or oxygen or Focused Search: (heart or lung)
and (blood or oxygen)
- Think of synonyms
for your topic, e.g., old people, elderly people.
- Think of different forms
of your search words and use truncation (*) to search for them
simultaneously, e.g. medic* will search for medicine, medicines,
medical, medics, medicinal, medication, etc.
- Stopwords
are commonly used words such as articles, pronouns, and prepositions.
These words are not indexed for searching in the database.
For example, 'the', 'for', and 'of' are stopwords.
