Library Faculty Biographies
Cinthya Ippoliti
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Thomas Edison
Cinthya received her Master's in Library and Information Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, and has a B.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She worked one year at California Lutheran University Library, three years at UCLA Biomedical Library and two years at Mesa Community College before joining the PVCC Library in the fall of 2006. Cinthya is a member of the American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, and the Arizona Library Association. She has published articles in Library Quarterly and the Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries. Besides her duties as Library Division Chair, Cinthya teaches information literacy and reference.

Sheila Afnan-Manns
“You've got to name it to claim it.” Dr. Phil McGraw
Sheila received her Master's in Library and Information Science from UCLA, and has an M.S. in Nonprofit Management /Policy Analysis from the New School for Social Research in New York City, and a B.A. in economics from the University of Washington. She worked for two years at Portland Community College Library and one year at Glendale Community College Library before joining the PVCC Library Faculty in the fall of 2008. Sheila is a member of the American Library Association (ALA), the ALA Association of College & Research Libraries, and the Arizona Library Association. In 2007 and early 2008, she served as a member of the national evaluation team for an Institute of Museum & Library Services grant awarded to Emporia State University School of Library & Information Management to increase the number of ethnic minorities holding MLIS degrees. Sheila's area of focus is library outreach, and she teaches information literacy and reference.

John
Chavez
“¡Qui docent discit!” - George Bernard Shaw
John received his Master of Library and Information Science degree
from the University of Texas at Austin, and has a B.A. in Mass Communications
from the University of Texas at El Paso. He worked at Our Lady of the
Lake University Library and Palo Alto Community College in San Antonio
before coming to Arizona. He also worked as a media director and eventually
as a faculty librarian at Phoenix College before joining the PVCC Library
Faculty in 1993. He is a member of the American Library Association,
and Library and Information and Technology Association. Since he's been
at PVCC, John was coordinator of Media Services for 11 years and a past
Library Division Chair for eight years. Currently, John teaches information
literacy and reference, researches, recommends and maintains all of
our information databases, coordinates the library website, handles
technology issues, as well as working with Librarians Online - MCCCD's
virtual reference service. Also, since he is fluent in Spanish, John
is available to help students in the library who are more comfortable
speaking in that language.

Kande Mickelsen

Kande received her Master's in Library Science from the University of Arizona, has a B.A. from Ottawa University in literature & education, and received her A.G.S. from PVCC. After working for five years as a computer programmer for Paradise Valley Unified School District, Kande taught language arts for five years in the Deer Valley School District, and then spent the next five years as a high school librarian in the Peoria School District. She joined the PVCC Library Faculty in the fall of 2008 (sort of coming full circle). Kande is a member of the Arizona Library Association and the Young Adult Library Services Association. Kande teaches information literacy and reference, and coordinates collection development and the annual Book Angels fundraiser.

Muriel Mullane
“There is no such thing as too many books!”
Muriel received her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Denver, and has a Master in Community College Education from Northern Arizona University and a B.S. in Library Science from the University of South Dakota. She joined the PVCC Library Faculty in 1996 and brought with her 20 years of academic library experience from NAU. Muriel is a member of Central Arizona Biomedical Libraries, and in 2003, was awarded a Proposition 301 grant for purchasing library resources in nursing. She has written several articles for the Arizona Library Association newsletter, and made presentations at conferences for the Arizona Library Association and LOEX of the West. At PVCC, Muriel teaches information literacy and reference, and coordinates collection development and the annual Book Angels fundraiser.

Shelle Witten
“Teach a person how to fish for information and that person will be able to solve many of life's curiosities and challenges.”
Shelle received her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Iowa and has a B.A. in Social Work from California State University at Chico. In 2005, she completed a second Master's in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. She worked 5½ years at St. Louis Community College/Florissant Valley Library and 2½ years at St. Louis Public Library before joining the PVCC Library Faculty in 1991. She is a member of the American Library Association and the Arizona Library Association. Shelle has published articles in the Journal of Library Administration, along with co-authoring a chapter in Developing nonhierarchical leadership on campus: case studies and best practices in higher education. Of all the projects in which she has been involved, she is proudest of spearheading the creation of the Maricopa Community College District's 24/7 Ask a Librarian service. As a result, she has made several presentations to different organizations including Arizona Library Association, LOEX of the West, Virtual Reference Desk, and the Association of College and Research Libraries on the topic of virtual reference. At PVCC, she is currently focusing on the area of Collection Development. In addition, Shelle teaches class sessions on the best approaches to research and she helps students at the Information Desk with their individual research.

Karen Anderson

Karen received her Master of Library Science from San Jose State University, and earned a B.A. in History and American Studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. Karen worked as a reference and instruction librarian at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, and at ASU West. Since 1996, Karen has been a law librarian by day, working first at the Maricopa County Superior Court and currently at a large Phoenix law firm. She joined the PVCC faculty in 2002 as an Adjunct Librarian. She has written book reviews for Library Journal, and served as editor on three library association newsletters. Karen is the webmaster for the Arizona Association of Law Libraries and a member of the American Association of Law Libraries. At PVCC, Karen teaches library skills and provides reference assistance to students.

Jonathan Barber

Jonathan received his Master's in Information Resources and Library Science from the University of Arizona, and has a B.A. in Political Science from Alfred University in New York. He is currently finishing a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. He is a member of the American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, and the Arizona Library Association. Prior to becoming a librarian, Jonathan worked for five years as a licensed customs broker, handling goods being imported to the United States. Jonathan has worked as an adjunct librarian in the district since 2004 and has worked at Glendale Community College, Phoenix College, Mesa Red Mountain Community College, Scottsdale Community College, and Gateway Community College. Jonathan joined PVCC in January 2008, and provides reference assistance along with teaching library skills classes.

Paula Crossman

Paula received her Master of Library and Information Studies, and her B.A. in English from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She has lived and worked in Arizona since 1996, and has worked for Arizona State University’s Fletcher Library, the Maricopa County Library District, Chandler Public Library, and Scottsdale Public Library. Paula joined the PVCC Library Faculty in the fall of 2004 as an Adjunct Librarian. She is a member of the Arizona Library Association and the Public Library Association. Paula speaks Spanish, reads French and embarrasses herself in Italian. In addition to assisting students at the Information Desk, Paula also teaches library skills classes.

Sylvia Frost

Sylvia received her Master of Library Science degree from the University of Arizona, and has a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts and Performance from Arizona State University. She is a member of the American Library Association and the Arizona State Library Association, and has presented at AZLA and ACRL conferences on various topics, including facilitation techniques and diversity. Sylvia has a passion for the arts and is active in the local arts scene. She has more than 20 years of experience in the library field, starting with a short stint at both Phoenix and Glendale public libraries, 19 years at ASU's Fletcher Library as a Library Specialist, and as an Adjunct Librarian at Estrella Mountain Community College and Glendale Community College. Sylvia joined the PVCC Faculty in 2007 as an Adjunct Librarian, and provides reference assistance along with teaching library skills classes.

Dixie Klatt

Dixie received her Master of Library Science from the University of Arizona, and earned a Master of Arts in English from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a B.A. in Secondary Education at Wisconsin State University-Eau Claire. Dixie has more than 20 years of experience and has worked as a librarian for law firms, the Phoenix Public Library, the American Graduate School of International Management, and Mesa Community College. She joined the PVCC faculty in 1992 as an Adjunct Librarian. Dixie has written articles for Private Law Libraries Newsletter and Phoenix Area Association of Law Librarians Network, and made presentations at the Arizona Library Association annual conferences. She is a member of the American Library Association, Arizona Library Association, and Area Reference Librarians Association. At PVCC, Dixie teaches library skills classes, provides reference assistance to students, and manages the library's archive collection.
