GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION
by Kathy McLain, M.A.

This section does not attempt to cover all the grammatical and punctuation errors that students make.  It does cover the most frequent and the most common errors.  Should you have questions regarding other grammar errors, the library has on reserve several different grammar handbooks.  Usually there is an entire chapter in these handbooks on comma splices, run-ons, sentence fragments, uses of the comma, uses of the semi-colon, uses of quotation marks, periods, question marks, exclamation points, apostrophes, numbers, and so forth.  It is important that you take the time to locate or purchase a good grammar handbook so that you can specifically answer your punctuation or grammar question.

The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers also has a small handbook included as part of the text.  By looking in this handbook, you will find specific answers to some punctuation and grammar questions specific to MLA format.  If you are writing your paper in MLA format, you should check this handbook for grammatical and punctuation questions first before referring to a general punctuation and grammar handbook.
