First-Year English FAQs

BASIC FORMAT OF ANY WORK CITED PAGE IN MLA
by Kathy McLain, M.A.

  • The margins--top, sides and bottom--of the works cited page are one inch.
  • The page number is placed one-half inch from the top of the page and one-inch from the right of the page.  The page number consists of the author's last name, first letter of last name capitalized, followed by the subsequent page number after the last page of text.  Use the header or footer command on your computer to place the page number outside the one-inch margin already set up on the computer.
  • To start the works cited page, begin a new page after the last page of the text.
  • One inch from the top of the paper centered in the middle of the page, type the title "Works Cited."  All text on the work cited page is double spaced.
  • One double-space after the term "Works Cited,"  begin your first entry in alphabetical order using the last name of the author.  If there is no author, alphabetize by the title of the work.
  • The first line of the first entry begins at the left margin.  When using a computer, all subsequent lines of the individual work cited entry are indented one-half an inch from the left margin.  Begin a work cited entry at the left margin.
