Creative Pathways Coordinator,
Employee & Organizational Learning

Topics:

Julie Wechsler, Creative Pathways, MCCCD

  • Julie introduced herself and her project involving personal and professional development for Maricopa employees. She gave an overview (see Personal_and_Professional_DevelopmentSheets.ppt) of the Creative Pathways program and its three tiers: Employee "Internship" Program, Maricopa Learning through Service Learning, and the Career Development System. The last being the purpose for her LCC meeting visit.
  • MCCCD has more than 1000 job descriptions in its job bank. As employees look to transitioning to a different job, Creative Pathways (CP) would like to provide better information about what jobs entail. To that end CP wants to model its job information after the Arizona Career Information System listings (at http://azcis.intocareers.org/info2.aspx?FileID=Occ&FileNum=100274&TopicNum=0) which lists tasks; common work activities; knowledge, skills, and abilities; preparation; and real life stories.
  • Julie asked for advice and feedback on the survey form (see Career_Development_Questionnaire_Sheets.doc) she is asking the LCC directors to fill out. The LCC group were supportive of CP's plan and decided to ask the group to fill it out and send it to Julie or bring it to our next meeting.

AZ Dev Ed Day, 9/23/2005, Tucson AZ:

  • Sarah, Bill H., and Kyoko attended and mentioned that they were impressed with the luncheon Keynote by Dr. David Caverly, Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Reading Program Coordinator, Texas State University - San Marcos
"Technology in Developmental Education: Past, Present, and Future." His examples of a day in the life of a college student was interesting as David presented a scenario of a student using intriguing technology to
    • attend class remotely,
    • catch up on missed minutes and get back in to "real" time,
    • do a science experiment of photographing his own body functions by swallowing a camera pill
    • do research with the help of a virtual "Know-bot" online
    • collaborate with others on a group project remotely.
  • Bill Hart mentioned how informative and interesting a presentation was. It was by Sarah Henderson, Faculty Director, Learning Enhancement Center, Mesa Community College
"Back to the Future? A Learning Assistance Center For Developmental and ESL Students at Mesa Community College." It was well attended. Sarah described in more detail MCC's Academic Skills Center which currently focuses on developmental students in reading, English, and ESL. Hopefully math will be included soon.

CRLA state chapter status update:

  • Rick passed out the revised, proposed CRLA By-laws and sign-up form.
  • We may have surpassed the needed 25 member by 11 or 12.
  • It is hoped to present the names to CRLA in November 2005

Other discussions included:

  • (Sarah) college services specifically targeting developmental education students.
  • (Eva) funding sources to support our programs including department fees usage & CPII
  • (Eva) support for reading in content areas (i.e., reading in philosophy or psychology)
  • (Bill) Learning Spaces sessions at NCLCA & MCCCD's own EMCCC. Bill mentioned the impressive flexibility offered by some of the new designs in furniture for learning spaces. He will share what he finds and selects for GWCC's area.
  • (Rick) Faculty involvement in center and tutoring
