LSC MISSION:

The mission of the Learning Support Center is to support learning and help everyone achieve their potential. We provide hope and encouragement in a friendly, safe environment.

Students using LSC programs and services will accomplish one of more of the following LSC Student Learning Outcomes:

  • become more independent learners
  • increase self-confidence
  • decrease stress level
  • improve grades
  • become more aware of how they learn best
  • increase knowledge of the subject
  • complete homework assignments
  • achieve potential
  • better define and solve problems
  • become more comfortable in using technology and web LSC resources available
  • work more often with others
  • prepare for their goal (transfer to another college/university, obtain employment, etc.)

The way the LSC tries to live our mission includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Free tutoring is available for any student for most PVCC academic classes.
  • The LSC provides specific need-based tutoring areas within the LSC to better support identified needs:
    • Writing center, which focuses on helping students understand the writing process and requires students to make single appointments and be prepared for each appointment.
    • Math lab, which provides drop-in for support and help in the developmental math courses.
    • Drop-in tutoring areas, which support courses in the subjects of math, science, accounting, computers, philosophy, psychology, and economics.
    • Language lab to support ESL students, as well as those taking foreign languages including Arabic, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
  • The LSC provides specific, focused, need-based support programs:
    • PASS - a required study time to support our valued athletes. The LSC study group rooms are scheduled from 12:30-1:30, Monday - Thursday.
    • ESL & Language Conversation Groups - open to PVCC students desiring to improve their 2nd language skills in a friendly, informal group setting.
    • Grammar Workshops - open to PVCC students to help with grammar in writing.
    • Study skill workshops - specific workshops open to all are provided in partnership with counseling and the adult re-entry program.
    • Calculator workshops - designed in partnership with math instructors; open to PVCC math students.
  • Tutor schedules are available for students via the internet and are listed by course.
  • The LSC staff care about students and work hard to help students become independent learners.
  • Students or faculty can schedule available LSC study group rooms to meet as small or large, student-led or faculty-led, study groups.
  • Study skill help is provided in the form of tip sheets, online resources, and workshops.
  • The LSC Office Staff Team meets weekly to focus efforts on improving service to our students. We also plan and assess immediate and long-term needs regarding staffing, services, resources, funding, and training.
  • Tutors and staff are required to complete training that focuses on learning theory, study strategies, communication strategies, learning preferences, diversity, change as a process, customer service, and content strategies.
  • Faculty Liaisons meet as an advisory group to provide support:
    • as communication liaisons with their own divisions,
    • in developing and providing marketing of LSC services to all,
    • in evaluating LSC service needs of students,
    • and in providing suggestions for ways for the LSC to meet identified learning support needs.
  • A supported Faculty/Staff Resource Room is provided for staff and adjunct/fulltime faculty to use computers with privacy for grading online, creating tests, working on their course material, etc.
