15. Singing on-key and off-key
When explaining, sometimes you “connect”, and other times you don’t, even though your explanation is the basically the same both times. The song is the same, but sometimes you sing “on key” and the student likes what he or she hears. Other times, you are hopelessly “off key” and the student just doesn’t get it. When that happens, what should you do? If you can, sing in a different key – try explaining it using different “modes” (graphical, analytical, manipulative, etc). And if you can’t seem to find the right key for this particular student, change places in the choir with another tutor.
